The banks are probably acting on the theory that now that the loan has beon paid up, no further disturbance in the money mariet need be appro- bended, With twenty-five millions of specie they proba- bly consider themselves strong enough to affurd all tho accommodation which the trade of the city can require. The news of the break up of the Railroad Conventioa at Boifalo has taken no one by surprise, Latterly, the com- pact bad worked well for none of the parties concerned Ivhad been violated repeatedly by the Central; it haa been violated by the Erie. It was hurting bota these roads, by driving Traltic to the Baltimore aud Obio and the Pennsylvania fines; it was inflicting severe injury on the city of New York—so that no one, perhaps, wili re- gret that it is at aneud. The chief immodiate cause of the break up appears to be the reevlution of the Ceatrat to run swift trains, So far as this master is concorne, the Central will obtain public sympathy, It may be very Well for railroads in Peonsytvanin aad Maryland to try to Settle how slowly they can ruv, and (o make laws against swilt travel; in this State we are in the habit of coasider ing time as of gome value, and the pudlic will invariably sido with any enterprise which cheapeus the price or accelerates the rate of travel. Nor do wo belicyo that any enterprise was ever hurt by meeting the public wishes io these respects. At any rate, it is an experiment in which the Central deserves to be sustained. Whatever may be the result of the rupture to stockholders in the roads interested, the prospect of cheap travel is fayorabie to the travelling community, and will, undoubtedly, tend to help the great work of recovery which is going on throughout the country, The stock market was greatly depressed this morning. Stocks opened at a concession from Saturday's prices, and declined from 34 to 34 per cent bolow the opening rates. Atthe first symptoms of the decline, the bears pressed stock for eale with unusual freedom. Emboldened by the succes of their late movements, they are now operating with romarkablo courage; young houses, with moderate capital, are not unfrequently selicrs of a thousand or fil. teen hundred spares of stock at a single session of the board—trusting to the gradual deciine in price to buy it in ava lowor figure, The stocks moro vigorously hammered this morning were New York Central, Michigan Guaran- teed, Galena and Rock Island, which were sold down re- spectively to 7624, 4324, 6734, and 68. Before the close of the scesion, however, prices rocovered, and wero firm at afraction above tho highest price of the day. At tue afternoon Board there was very little business done, but the morning prices wero sustained, except in the case of Galena, Rock Island and Toledo, These—stocks were lower. The earnings of tho Galena for the second week in March were only $19,000, a fraction less than the earnings of the samo week last year. La Crosse Land Grants were higher. The bill extending the time for tho construction of the road from Madison to Portago has passed the Wisconsin Assembly and may be considered week. Messrs. Jonathan Sturges, Jozeph W. Alsop and Fredorick C. Gebhard, whose term as directors oxpired on that day, were re-clected unanimously. There were ro- presented at the meeting 122,060 shares of the stock. On motion of Mr. Richard Cobden it was Reeolved, That this mecting learns with satisfaction that a censider able saving bus been introduced into the expense of working the line, as compared with previcus years; and it reiterates tho Cpiuion expreseed at a former annual meeting, and which it is glad to flud has been carefully observed by the dirctors, that all extensions, guaranties and outside exgagements should be avoided. That the meeting expresses its confidence in the integr' ty and zeal of the directors; and it is satisflod that the pro. perty and reeources of the company, which partake moro br the character of a Jand than a reiiroad company, have sustained ho permanent injury from the recout adverse circumstances; and that, with wisdom in its management ‘and patience oa the part of those interested, tho future success of the undertaking will amply realize all the roa. sonable cxpectations of its proprietors.
