The Theatres Last Night. BROADWAY THEATKE-~- ANTONY AND (CLEOPATRA, Doctor Johnson says of Antony and Cleopatra, whilo praising the rapidity of its action, “ which keeps curiosity busy and the passions always interested,” that, with the exception of the feminine arts which distinguish Cleopatra, no character is very strongly discriminated. “ The evente,”’ saith the Doctor, “ of which the principal aro described according to history, are produced without any art of conuection, or care of d.sposition. These conclu- sions, the verity of which have always been apparent to the critical reader, become absolute matters of exigency with the manager who attempts to put the play upon the stage; he Ands a great many, perhaps too many, opportunities for scenic effects—some grand epeeches—a great deal of action—the story passing rapidly from Alexandria to Rome—from thence to Syria, and nto Fgypt—and numerous situations, strong enough in themselves, but too inartistically arranged for the en- tertainment of a general andience. The work, in fact, must be done for the author as wéll as the artists and arti- gang, To use a familiar expression Shakspere’s play is weak ig the back. Nor bas the subject been moro fortuitously handled, cs a whole, by other authors who have attempted to treat it ina dramatic form. The Coun- tess of Yembroke, Sir Charles Sedley and Dryden, made comparative failures with it, although Dryden’s “All for Love” is considered bis best dramatic work, Just a century ago Garrick pioduced an alteration of Shakspere’s play at Drary Lane, and it was acted with moderate success, Since that tims the play bas been rarely acted in Eng!s and its performance fm the United States is not within our remem- brance. Within the past three years it was produced at the Sadier’s Welis, London, with Mr. Pholps @nd Miss Glyn as Antony and Cleopatra, and being finely done, had agocd ran, Its performance’ last evening at the Broadway theatre was, therefore, especially interest Ing, In the first place, it wus the last grand eveut In. the history of the theatre, whicb, in a few weeks, will give ‘way to tae exigencies of commerce.
