Butas I have no thought of entering into a Jenerat discussion of the subject " Jon only to a single fact, viz.:— Bouse is erected the whole neigh’ wae saloons. Can your friends explain this plo~ on any princioies which will gave their theory ? De De drunkards gamblers tock around an .wstitution which reproves their vices? But let me pass on to‘another aspect of this question. We have glanced at the plays aad the performers: suppose ‘we come a little nearer bome. ‘You aro a professing Chris Does it simply mean that you book; that you acknowledge Jesas of Nagareth Messiah, and that you are ‘bound to load a moral ite ie do you mock mo,” you are ready to exclaim, ‘‘by PP § pithy Wke thisy” Of course T know that a fan fession of religion includes a great deal more than yor have stated.” Yes, it does include a great deal ri And it embraces gomething besides sermons and sacra- ments, When you united with the charch you renounce 4 the world. In Heise! at least, you bade adien to its “pomps and vanities,’ aud engaged to follow Him whom the world eracitied. e new life upon which you then professed to enter is defined with sufficient accuracy by expressions Mko these, from an authority you will not iapugn:— “Be not conformed to this world.” Pie. 5] were of the world, the world would love his own; bu ¢ are not ofthe world, but [ have chosen you out of Reworid ‘ieretore tne worst yon ‘Phe world is crucitied untome, and Minto the world.” “The friendship of the world is enmity with God.”” “Ye are not your ows, buthought with & price.” b ro man will come after me, Let, him Nfoay himself, and take 1r068 daily and follow me,” SPertecling holiness in the tear of the Lord.’” “Let us ron with patience the race that is set before us, look- Ing unto Jesus.” “Not every one that saith unto me ‘Lord,’ ‘Lord,’ shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but be that doeth ‘the’ will of my Father which is in heaven.” ‘Here is Christianity. Will you apply the measuring lino to that style of life into which your gay friends would en- tice you? I need not detain you with verbal criticisms, nor Inquire minutely into the import of such phrases ag “tho world,” “taking up the cross,” and “denying one’s self.” Dilute these expressions down to the lowest point of significance which they will possibly bear, they mean something. And if they have any meaning, they must de- note that there is a wide und irreconcilable diilereuce be- tween the church and the world. It was perfectly op- tional with you to come imto the charch or not, You were at liberty, on your own responsibility to God, to refrain from ‘confessing Christ.” Bat you choose to take tuis xtep. You voluntarily assumed the vows of a Christian profession. And, in go doing, you promised, before hea- ven and earth, that, as God should enable you, you would deny. youreelt, give up the world, and to follow the Sa- “t now) you mean still to frequent the Opera, will you do yourself the justive to inquire what you have “given Op”? for Christ, or wherein you differ, except in a formal and Ifeless attendance ‘upon the Lord's table, from “the workl?’”” Tho line between the church and the world must needs bo drawn somewhere. As regards the subject of amusements, jou would in candor admit that there must be some things from which professors of religion ought to abstain, But what are they? ‘The same reasoning which sausiies you that you may properly frequent tae Opera will justify in ationding the theatre—at least, where the jheatre not stink into the depths of debauchery. And, ifthese Pe aliowabie, it would"be peurile to objec! to public balls or on other species of entertainment countenanced by the ga! world. In other words, the “renunciation of the work % which a person makes ‘on uniting with the church, be- comes a hollow, ostentatious pretence, a sanctimonious felschood, an opprobriam to the gospel’ and an insu't to God. If this be not the case, will you pointout the fallacy inthe argument? Will you show what one indulgence practiced by the world, you feel yourself called upon to Felinquish by reason of your profession of religion? Leaving you to answer this question at your leisure, let me remint! you that it would be no justification of your eondact even though, as you allege, you might attend the Opera “without being injured by “it.” There may be room for a difference of opinion on thia point. It would be necessary, in resolving it, to consider the time consum- ed not only ut the play, butin the preparation for it, the wmoidental and often large expense in the way of dress and equippage, the emotions and passions brought into ex- erciso, the assdciations involved, the effect upon your de- votional habits, and its whole influence upon your charac- ter and life. A faithful soratiny might reveal the fact ‘that, 80 far from being a harmless piece of recreation, it wae doing you a serious and lasting injury. But if it were otherwise, the decision must be the same. You cannot elude the responsibility which attaches to your example. Your going to these amusements will be an encouragement to others to go. Nor will they stop to ask whether you pick and cull among the pieces, to select those only which are without the taint of cissolutencss, Fnongh that you, a professor of religion, “attend the .”? This will be (to the whole extent of your influ. ‘their license for going to gee any and everything nic may be brought forward under that name. Nor this alone. While encouraging one class of people—per- haps among them other church members—to visit the you are deeply wounding and grieving mauy of your fellow Christians with whom religion is something ‘More than aname. Beyond a question, the feeling of the great mass of sincere, earnest Christians, of whatever Sect, is against you. They do not regard the Opera, con- ducted as it usually is, a8 an innocent amusoment. "Thoy watch with anxiety its encroachments upon the charch. They aro pained and humbled that so many who bear the name of Christ should yield to the seduction, and so wound the Saviour in the house of bis friends. Even if they were ‘mistaken, it might become you to concede something to their scruples. But when you perceive—as you willifyou examine—that this class comprises most of those in every church who are eminent for their piety and usefulness, you will not lightly assume that they are wrong on this point. ‘he reasonable presumption is, that they are quite as likely to be right as the throng of worldly. ‘minded pro- fessors who plead for the yery minimum of religion and the maximum of self-indulgence which they suppose to be compatible with their ever getting to heaven, Thave no leisure to pursue the subject further, Indeed, it was my purpose merely to suggest a few thoughts, suf” ficiently obvious, which might aid you in resol ving the question of duty as a personal matter. ‘Should you happen to show this letter to any of your ra going friends, I can well imagine what they will thine of it. The love of music is 80 pure a sentiment, 60 refining, and go opulent a gource of enjoyment, that they will deride the whole thing a8 an ebullition “Puritan. ism.” Not unlikely they may treat yon to a fresh re- hearsal of Shakespere’s memorable anathema against ‘The man that hath not music in himself— ‘The motions of bis spirit dull as night, ‘And his aifections dark as Erebus. Very weil. Ido not expect them to see the subject as I vee it. Their point of view is a widely different one. They do not profess to have avy sympathy with what you andI understand by elical religion. ‘They have no conception of such a rulo of duty as the gospel preecribes—a rule minute, comprehensive, spiri- wal, authortasive—which covers the whole range of lite, and extends to the very thoughts and intents of the heart ‘Their notions of “the church” make it an institution by f eligible and praiseworthy institution, but one, nevertheless, which, having iw own appomted dav and ordinances, must not presuine to arrogate any con- trol over men’s secalarities, Tooking at tho question from the position they occupy, it i quite naturai that they should regard the views express: ed in this letter as savoring of asceticism. But I beg to on, is this the quarter to which a professed follower orcana should look for counsel on a question of Christian duty? Are you to go to the world to ascertain what Christianity demands of you? Is the world to be allowed to expound the ecriptures for you? Is the world to inter- pret be you the vows you made in entering into covenant wth God? And if #0, what can that piety be worth which thus discards the only anthorized rule of faith and duty, and substitutes for it the loose, fluctuating, partial and prejudiced dicta of fashionable society ? For consistency’s cake, be one thing or the other, “If the Lord be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” Either resign your Christianity or renounce those things with which Christianity can have no fel- lowebip. itis rend concern of ours that our religion should be stig- matized as frigid andascotic. Worse things were said of our Master. And we know that the charge ts acaium- ny. We know that the religion wo profese—not the wretched caricature which is sometime set up to be joeret at—ts friendly to all rational and innocent pleasures; and that there are no people in the world who enjoy a tithe of the bappiness of those who live according to iis precepts, From thege people, who wear not only Christ’s livery, but Christ's image, you are severing yourself, by adopting the maxims and usages of the world respecting the amuse. ment discussed in this letter. The purport of your exam. ple is, that the opera is a legitimate entertainment for members of the Church. Ifit be proper for you, it ‘s pro. for all other Christian professors. Not only so, but if Me be proper for the laity, it is equally saitable for the clergy. ‘There is not one code of morais for the people and another for the ministry. Tf you may frequent the Opera, so may your pastor. Ani you know very well how much respect you would en- tertain for him, and how far his appeals on the Sabbath would aA hap Saco you be in the habit of meeting him at Will you review ‘ew whole subject? 1 am aware that the ground I have taken is distasteful to many chu members.
