For many years before it was used for the above purposes it was used as a private dwelling. Atelegraph from Washington to Messrs, Whitehouse, Son & Morrison, announced, this morning, the important intelligence that the Secretary of the Treasury had de- ferred to the wisbes of the financial community, and had agreed to allow the July caupon to remain attached to the new bonds, the purchaser paying, together with the prin- cipal of the bond, whatever interest had accrued between Jap. 1 and the date of his deposit. The effect of this an- nouncemen! was to place the new bonds on a par with the last issue, and, accordingly, they at once advanced in price. At the morning board 10834 was bid for large amounts. Generally speaking, considering tho re- viving aspect of trade, the possible necessitios of the government, and the unsettled state of Kurope, people seem to think that the government has done well; though, bad Mr. Cobb altered his mind about the coupon a week earlier, there is no doubt but the bids would have been more numerous, and from one half to ‘one per cent higher. Several persons who would have bid for large amounts on European account were restrained from doing 0 by the impossibility of selling the bonds abroad without the July coupon, It will be no- ticed that neither the Bank of Commerce nor Mr. Belmont figure among the list of bidders. We have reason to be- lieve that the foliowing will be found to be the principal successful bids:— Amount Rates of Names of Bidders. Offered. Premium, . In most instances it is presumed thatthe stock will go into the banks, and will swell their loans in equal proportion to their loss of specie. The reports of the earnings of the railroads, though at present comparing with the worst season they had ever known up to that time, still show a falling off, the December business ‘ago policeman Ferguson, of the Twentieth precinct, saw two suspicious looking fellows lurking about the stable of Mr. Crowell, in Twenty-seventh street, near Tenth avenue, and mistrusting their intentions, ordered them to move on. In about an hour afterwards he saw one of the men coolly leading a borse out of the stable, and in a minute or 80 afterwards the second fellow came up and helped his comrade to mount the steed. The officer rushed upon the scamps for the purpose of arresting them, when they took to their heels and endeavored to escape. Holmes & Co., No, 307 Grand street, had cccasion to send their errand boy to the exchange office No. 133 Bowery, for the purpose of getting some wncurrent movey changed ‘The messenger was followed by a smart thief, and while returning to the store with a roll of city bills in his hands he was accosted and told that the broker had imposed upon him, inasmuch as all the money he had in his pos- session was counterfeit. The thief represented himsclf to be a detective policeman, and taking the mouey out of the boy’s hand, told him to run back to his employer's store and gend one of the firm to the Police Court, so that a complaint could be made against the broker. So well did the sham policeman work upon the fears of the youngster that the latter was easily persuaded to do as he was de- Bired, leaving the thief in possession of $186. Among the stolen bills was ove of the denomination of $100 and one of $50. The remainder of the funds was in small bills, Of course nothing has been heard of the thief since ho parted company with the errand boy. CLEANSING THE AVOEAN STABLR.—An attempt was made yesterday by Justice Connolly to frighten off one or two of the numerous ekinners who hang around the Tombs. One of the fraternity was arrested for having cheated a poor German woman out of her last dollar, while others were warned to keep at a distance, or else they would be treated in a similar manner. It is to be hoped that all the Skinners will be excluded from the court room, and that hone save respectable lawyers will be permitted to. prac. tice.
