There prevailed throughout the day a steady, fair de- mand for all qualities at all the yards, and for extra fat cattle prices were somewhat higher than our previous quotations, There were but fow of the last named, and to that fact alone is attributable the advance in prices established by the brokers. The average quality was somewhat inferior to that of last week, there having arrived a much larger number of common cattle, which sold ato, a 8c, The average price was about 9c., and ‘the range from 7c. to Mc., though there were but few sales atthe outside price. We would call particular at- tention to sales on Mondays at Mr. E. S. Carpenter’syards, at Bergen Hill. There were received at that place during the week 1,140 head of cattle, of which 650 head were se- lected at prices ranging from 7c. to 10!gc. per pound by the New York butchers, who are beginning to wake up to the fact that they do not usually have ‘the first selection at Forty-fourth street, inasmuch as the ecum from the = ‘Hill yards ig sent to the Washing- ton drove yard, and'butchers are thereby led to suppose they are selecting from fresh arrivals. The Bergen Hill yards are fast gaining notoriety, and they bid fair oon to Monopolize the entire business, ’ It would certainly be of advantage tothe upper part of the city to do away with 80 great a public nuisance as the Forty fourth street yards are known to be, situated as they are in what ought to be the most beautiful portion of the city, bordering on the Fifth avenue.
