‘The Loss of the Steamer C. Vanderbilt. ‘WMRILLING ACCOUNT OF THE SCENE BY AN BYE WIT SOUNDINGS—STRIKING IOAN RIG—NOBLE CONDUCT OF THE CAPTAIN, BIC. One of the passengers of the Sound steamboat C. ‘Vanderbilt, on her recent trip hence for Stonington, has furnished us with the following interesting ac- count of the loss of the steamer and adventures of the passengers:— We left New York shortly after four o'clock P. M.on Monday last, with what might be called a fair prospect for good weather. A few hours sub- Sequent, however, showed indications of a change, commencing with rain and a strong wind from the northeast. The wind increasing, and a snow storm setting in, prevented our making any light beyond Saybrook. Steam was then at intervals shut off, and the lead hove, and our progress materially Jessened, till our position was supposed to be nearly up with Bartlett's Reef Light; but, although our whistle was repeatedly blown, no response came from the reef light bell. Soundings being conti- nued, showed that from thirty fathoms we were now in less than ten fathoms water. The anchor was then let go, but such was the force of the gale that it soon parted, and we shortly after brought up on the western extremity of Fisher’s Island, within three hundred yards of Race Point, a much dreaded spot to Sound navi- gators in stormy weather. A hawser was at once sent ashore and made fast to arock. Had we struck on the Point, not a doubt exists that the immediate loss of both boat and passengers would hhave ensued. It was now blowing a gale; the very elements seemed to be holding a carnival, which, with the snow driving in mad fury, rendered it difficult to look to windward. It was not long ere the steamer bilged aft, and being heavily laden, she soon be- came fast. The only apprehensions now felt was for her holding together, and each counted the minutes of the three hours’ interval to daylight with intense anxiety; meanwhile all maintaining the utmost or- der, the gentlemen occasionally stretching the truth somewhat in praiseworthy efforts to calm the fears of the ladies, which latter were closely scru- tinizing the faces of Capt. Frazee and his officers in the vain hope of finding out the condition of things. But the gallant Captain’s composure re-assured them. Daylight came at last, and with it the con- soling appearance of a house at the point of the reef, dimly seen through the driving storm. To send a man ashore was the work of a moment. He reported the building to be the government re- Hef house, within which wagastove. Wood was sent at once, a fire kindled, and then commenced the disembarking—beginning with the ladies and children, under the gentle care and surpervision of the captain. ‘After frequent trips with the small boat all were placed ashore, no one sustaining as much as a scratch. This done, UBM eee water, cooking utensils, mattresses and blankets were liberally sent and all made as comfortable as the crude nature of our accommodations would it of. Here were domiciled our seventy-one passengers, together with about twenty of the waiters and attachés of the boat, in a room fourteen by twenty feet (with a cock loft of corresponding size, only accessible by an pest ladder with one broken spoke), for one night and nearly two days. Some few of the gentlemen (7) passengers, who shall be nameless, ensconced themselves comforta- bly in one corner, and, despite the appeals to join those of their fellow passengers nobly assisting in pre fee articles of comfort for the common Fnalned immovable. It is, however, plea- Sine to record these few as exceptions rather than the rule. Night came, with its dreaded pall of dreariness ‘kness. Lamps lighted, aud arrangements for slee: ing, being conchanad hymns were sung, in ay 1 joined with perfect unanimity, and never “Ol Hundred” sung with more heartfelt curnpeinnall than on that rock-bound beach, upon the night of January 4. A touching and beauiifal ayer was offered up by Mr. Vincent Colyer, of New York, which was most gratefully appreciated by his fellow passen- rs, and thus the long night dragged its slow ngth along, the monotony being only broken b occasional admonitions concerning our fire, which had already once communicated to the roof. I must not omit recording the frequent visits of our good captain, to see that all were comfortable and wanting for nothing, regardless of himself the while, 2 ea nearly prostrated by anxiety and ex- aDey. ‘dawned at last, bringing pleasurable emo- tions to all—for the storm king had abated his wrath. In emulation of chanticleer, several gen- tlemen turned roosters for the occasion, and rang out clear and shrill, whilst others represented the hen and turkey portion of the feathered tribe with considerable fidelity. Sweetly now rose the sun, shedding a cheering influence upon us all. A visit to the boat was made wan regain the natural use of their limbs, r having been drawn up in the smallest possible space for thirteen hours. ai we issued from our shanty a casual observer would have set us down for a filibustering party, if not a band of brigands. Each man had aroun his shoulders @ blanket, secured at the neck with home- made shaw! pins, formed out of sticks; and thus parelled, with the name of “C. Vanderbilt” en- ebeling the back of each man, our appearance was ludicrous in the extreme. ‘Then such a display, a of shocking bad hats, which quite recently — paneer reposing in all their spot- and gloss on the shelves of Tey. Genk, Beebe and Knox, little dreaming of gel sundry dousings they were so soon to experi- ence. In this connection I must chronicle a fellow pas- T's persevering efforts to regain his tile, which erie ruthlessly blown from his head into the water. With the aid of a boathook he dashed at it, but was unable quite to reach it. By powerful eff ots and many y wees attempts to form a current to- wards him with the hook, he performed so many surgical operations upon the said hat that, when regained, it would have brought a premium from some Falstaffian hero, to exhibit as a trophy of his hairbreadth ‘scapes. Pion} after "reaching the boat the steamer Maine, perceiving our position and our signal flying, approached, but owing to the high swell running could render us no assistance. We had a similar visit from the Plymouth Rock, with like result. On learning at Stonington and New London ot our misfortune, scores of smail craft, from a sail- boat to a schooner, started upon a stampede to our _“ relief” (which meantto relieve our pockets). In cma aa mae mission, however, they were doomed to disappointment. The unruly waves recluded a near approach; yet, like wolves, they overed about, unwilling to give up their prey. Our good captain, however, had already started overland to West Harbor to charter a schooner for our conveyance to Stonington. This done, pre- tions were commenced for leaving. Two ox ams, with wagous, were sent by Capt. Frazee for the ladies and children, into which they were placed. Many gentlemen had already struck out for the schooner, the rest following with thé ox teams. Arriving at the Mecca of ail our hopes, we found our schooner aground at ebb tide. This unlooked for calamity was balanced by finding two fishing smacks, into which we embarked, and squared away for Stonington. Arrived at Stonington we were all required, by an attaché of the Vanderbilt, to give up our blankets, = though this was only : ht and proper, yet any there were who begged hard to retain theirs oe memento of our 5! Npwreck. Some might well have been spared us, having been rendered useless by mutilation, as not afew of the passengers placed two blankets to- gether, and then finding the centre, would cut a hole sufficiently large to admit their heads. The blank- ets then falling down upon their shoulders, formed a complete Mexican rig. It is needless to say we were all delighted to reach Stonington; yet there was a drawback to our exultation. g004, kind, noble hearted cay fed (than whom none better exists, combining essentials for his ition, bravery and ia ouney had fallen from sheer exhaustion, and been lefton the island, too ill to accompany us. That he may soon recever and speedily retake his position in the line to which he is s0 eminently fitted, is the sin- cere hope of all who accompanied him out last Monday. T. K. The policy which bas been for successive years pursued by most of the railroad corporations, of increasing the per- manent debt of the companies, in order to pay off present liabilities, bas already proved disastrous, and will be shown to be ruinous in very many cases. Not only has this policy been injurious in giving the embarrassed cor- porations cash resources, and thus inducing increased ex- penditures, but the discounts paid haye been enormous. In contrast with this course, it is well to know that here and there a corporation has gone on the plan of raising money from their stockholders. The Cumberland Coal and Iron Company found itself in need of money, called on its stockholders, received between $240,000 and $250,000 in cash—not as a loan, but as payment to the capital—and bas now no floating debt which cannot be paid by it at once. It bas a working capital of nearly $150,000, and bas set a good example to every corporation which owes a floating debt.
