Wepvespay, Jan. 5, 1859, BEEF CATTLE. ° ‘There prevailed at the opening a fair demand for beef cattle, expecially for the selections. The number of first lass cattle was Jarger than usual, and prices were stilt during the early partof the day, but subsequently tho demand abated somewhat, and prices were somewhat Jower. Many of the selections brought 103gc., and quite a number, we understood, brought as high as 2c. early in the day, but we heard of no sales direct at above 10%0.; and in the after part of the day it was hard to ob- tain even that price. The average quality was fairish, there being but few inferior cattle for sale. The at- tendance was large at all the yards, but they were not buyers to any extent at current rates. There were only 2,588 head at all the yards, show- fa decrease from last weok’s supply ‘of 349 head. At Bergen Hill there were sold about 400 head, at prices ranging from 734c. to 9440. At Browning’s and eleewhere there provaiied a steady fair demand, and the supplies were exhausted at un early hour in the day, Prices for tho day ranged from 63gc. to 10}c., closing with a moderato inquiry at prices tending downwards, The total receipts at all the yards for the week, lust week, and the week ending January 6, 1858, were as follows Aillerton’s. "There has prevailed a steady fair deman¢ for cows of all descriptions during the past week, bat extra milch cows, giving eighteen to twenty quarts per day, have been in more active inquiry than others, and prices have been withont important change, sales having been, in al- most all cases, at rates within our range of quotations, There have been several prime milch cows on sale during ‘the past few weeks, which have brought from $75 to $100 per head—the latter price was paid in only one or two races, however, while sales at from $75 to $85 were wot of unfrequent’ eceurrence. Of course they were bought for private use, and very many of them are in- taal for city use. The demand for ordinary cows from Long Island milkmen has been to a fair extent, and the Teceipts have been entirely consumed. ‘The total receipts at all the yards for the week, last week and week ending Jan. 6, 1868, were as follows:— bates "8. hegre hot 's. The average price for the week was about 534c, The number of inferior yeals is becoming mailer, and we can gee a decided improvement in the average quality.
