THE YANAEES IN ROBE DE CHAMERE. ‘What « Frenchman Thinks of the American Press—Personal Advertisements. ‘® Philadelphia correspondent of the Paris journal PD Avenir g)ve8, iB @ letter to that journal, his impression’ | of the American prese, and eepecially of the persona! att | vertixements of the New York Hexatp, under the caption of “The Yankees in Robe de Chambre.”” The letter is ‘Spcy enough to warrant us in giving a translation of it:— Pwoanerrma, Oct. 2, 1858. Ma. Eprron—If there is anything progressive in America —and by America we proudly mean here the United States —it is certainly the periodical press of every kind. You can hardly imagine, on the other side of the Atlantic, the formidable qnantity of paper transported by the mails or sold in the streets. There is nota little city or town or village that has not the pretension to tell to the universe, Mbrough its journal, the decisions rendered by its Esquire and the arreste made by its policeman, when he does make avy—a very rare thing. Everything is made pub- lic. Every lawyer or doctor that wants to get business, every sectarian that invents a new mode o° adoring God and of robbing his proselytes, every charlatan that feels the need of producing his humbugs and exhibiting Die clap-trap, has bis paper. Barnum has two of them. ‘The difficulty is not in getting a thing inserted in @ nowspa. per, but getting readers for it—the creating a position for ‘™ in this general mel: It is then that the Yankee imagi- mation breaks out ina evblime fashion; so that it is the classic land of pulling. It assames ail forms—the most volgar as well as the most eccentric, Tt must at- tract aitention, and be read. This people of tratitcers care litde for politics. It requires advertisements, and so these cover a nine tenth part of the newspapers. Each advertiser strives to give prominence to his own an wouncement in the mediey of publication. T recollect that ai the time of the Crimean war—whilst ail the aspirations ef the Yankees were for Russia—neither logical nor honor- able for them, as I think—advertisoments generally com- menced thus: —" Sebastopol taken!” or ‘Sebastopol not ‘taken! You skipped over a score of tines to get quickly ‘at the stirring news, and found that even if Sebastopol was pot taken, Mr. Goodyear neverthcleas continued to sel! vulcanized india rubber suspenders, calculated to remove, after some months wear, by the eticct of the electricity, the largest and most annoying protuberances, To the American journalists everything is good to fi!! up Weir columne—the most provoking scandals, the most im probable stories, the most repugnant private revelations. A distinguished writer has said that this peopie has no moral sense. That is particularly troe in the newspaper press. Fenimore Cooper and Charles Dickens have cach attacked the discreditable blackmailing system exercised by those ebeets that exist in the lower depths of the news- paper world, The newspaper is the hfe of the United States citizen. It eerves him for everything, is good for everything, stands to himn lieu of every. it he writes to his wife, to his friends, Yo bie children, to his creditors, to his mistress. io it he gives an account of his affairs ‘as well as of his love affaire, under a veil more or less (rans. parent, Be sure that if two Yankees plant their wigwaus magorge of the Rocky Mountains, the one will be the journalist of the other, who in his torn will become the other's banker, because the banker swarms as much as ‘the journalist, and the daguerreotypist as much as both together. 1 have no better amusement on Sunday— the day when you are most a prey to ennui in all Protest aut countries—than reading these curious commun! for which the newspaper acts as a complaisant colporteur. Jam collecting a large number that I have copied, or rather cut out, according to the established custom here— @ thing which gives to the newspapers, perforated by thourands of openings, the appearance of the house of that good Counsellor Crespel, spoken of in Hofiman’s Deok, “The Cremona Violin Itie particularly the New York Haxaup that, by rm of the extent of its circulation and of the extrem: Dility of its adver thing. Besides, among the moving, travelling, unsettled class of people who constitute the greater part of the population of New York, the addrese of an intimate friend of to-day fs not alwaye known the next day, and in the meantime it may be absolutely ne cessary to communicate with him. Mt if thought there will be a great failing off in business here during the coming season, and it ix even predicted by some that the whalers will eventually abandon Talca- huano, and resort either te Tome or San Carlos. The former is @ little town lying just inside the entrance to this bay, and has within the past two months been bo- nored by the supreme government with the title and priv) Jeges of a “Port de Mayor" —a first class port of entry, which, it i thought, will Lave the effect of drawing the whalers from ‘Taleahuano. Both these places have their peculiar advantages. The fermer has a larger extent of back country, and consequently a more abundant supply of produce; while the" latter possesses all the attractions of an old resort, with a superior anchorage, and close proximity to one of the principal cities in the Tepublic—Concepeion. A fierce competition will be kept wp between the two places, the effect of which will be to weaken the resources of both, without effecting the object iw view. The opinion that San Carlos, on the island of Chiloe, will be the principal port of call in futare, i# fast gaining ground, and nearly all agree that Talcahuane has more to fear from such @ rivalry than from any ebe may encounter at Tome. Many of our whalers, expecially those cruising on the Huafo ground, frequent San Carlos solely on account of its natural advantages, and the abundance and excellence of ite produce.
