ouR WAVAL ViSITERS, Visit of the British Steam wrieste Valorous Sir William Gore Cuseley—International Courtesic:—The Frigate Sabine. Tro arrival of this fing frijzate was announced in yes: terday!'s Hixarp, and as she will probably remain in our port for cight or ten days, she will be an object of mach interest 1 our people, ‘The fact that she was one of the vessels of the Auantict yh squatron, and the im- portent part which she played as the escort of the Aga- memeron while that versel was engaged in the work of Jaying the cable, give her an a-tditional interest, The Valorous is one of sovora! steam frigates that wore built by the British governmont about seven years ago. She was detached for the purpose of supplying the placo of the steam frigate Leonard, whieh, it will bo remem. ‘Dore, acted as the consort of the Agamemnon on the frst attempt to lay the cable, in August, 1867, The Leopard ‘Was at the time on the Guif station, under the command of Captain Wainwright, and her crew, like that of the Susquehanna, suifered from the yellow fever, but not to the samo torribls extent. The Valo. rous was in the Black and Bultic sea: durins ‘the war with Rursia, and although not in acti n, rendered efficient service in other ways, During the unsnocessfa telegraph expedition of last June sho fought her way through the terrific storm of eight days, in which tho Agamemuon was so near being lost. Her quarter bout were almost carried away, and her cabin was partly unde* water, but by keeping upafull head of steam sho wa enabled to ride out the gale successfully. When the whole telegraph squadron assembled at the mid-ocoan rendez. vous, Captain W. ©. Aldham, her commander, wont oa board tho Nitgara, whore, with Captains Hudson and Preedy, the necessary arrangements wero made in regard to the time of splicing the cable and other matters neces- sary for the great undertaking. Hardly, however, had ‘the splice been made, and three miles been paid out from each of the two cablo ships, before the line parted, and they were obliged to recommence the work. The splice was again made, and the ships separating started for their different destinations ; but this time they were doomed to the same ill fortune. About eighty miles of the cable were paid out from the Niagara and Agamempon, when it was found that the continuity was gone, and that there was ‘dead earth’ on the con- ductor, which, explained to the unscientific, siguifies that the conductor was in contact with the bottom. Another and a third attempt was mace; bit, after about threo hun- dred adcitional miles had been run ont from the two ships, the cabie broke near the stern of the Agamemnon, and the squadron returned to Queenstown to coal and prepare for the final and successful effort. Tho history or what fol- jowed is still fresh in the minds of our readers, and it Is only necessary to add that the Valorous lod the Agamom. non into Valentia Bay, where the eastern end of the cable was landed on the Sth of August last. The Valorous was despatchod to this country for the purpose of conveying Sir Wiliam Gore Ouseley to Central America as tho Special Envey from England. On her way sho stopped at Fayal, from which she brought forty-two of the passengers of the fated Austria, who were Janded at that port by the French bark Maurico. All this was, however, given in detail in yesterday's Heratp. The other ships which were employed in laying the cable have been since ongnged on ditferont miasions. The Niagara bas been sent swith a cargo of Congos to Africa, whilo the Gorgon, ber sesoort, was at work, when last heard fron;, making sound- ‘ngs at the entrance to the harbor of St. Johus. A rather’ dangerous reef, known as the Merlin rock, stands right in the way of veasels, and on this rock the Niagara twice struck on going into and coming out of the harbor. Capt. Dayman, the commander of the Gorgon, had recommend. ed tho remova! of the rock by basting. The Agamemnon has been put out of commission, and ig at present under- going the necessary repairs to fit her for sea, ‘The Valorous carries sixteen guns, and her register is 1,250 tons, Her horso power is 400, and her full comple- ment of officers and men 220. The following is a list of her officers:— Captain—Sir Wm. ©. Aldham, Knight of the Bath. Lieutenante—K. Moore, Hon. J. S$. Fitzmaurice, Howard Kerr. Master—8. Braddon. Lieutenant of Marines—II. C. Heaslop. Surgeon—Patrick Slevin Paymaster—W. M. Shanks. Chaplain and Naval Instructor—Rov. D, J. Boutflower. Amistant Surgeou—P. B. Manstield. Matee—Uion. E. L. V. Mostyn, Wm. Erskine, Wm. H Royse. Chief Fngineer—Richard Williameon. Assistant Engineere—W. Farquharson, J. Broach, J. Scott, H. Walker, Robt. Gilchrist. Captain Aidbam bad the title of Knight of the Bath con ferred upon him for the important service and assietanc + which he rendered in laying the cable, the same mark o Alstinction having also been con’erred upon Captal Preedy of the Agamemnon. Whatever doubts may b entertained as to the claims of others who have been knighted in consequence of their connection with the great enterprise, there can be none in rogard to the two gentlemen we have named. Captain Aldbam is one of the most efficient and talented officers in the British navy, and for that reason he was appointed by the government to {be important position which be occupied. He is a gentle. ‘man of the most unassuming manners, and, independent of his official position, a man of fine qualities, We tras, ho wiil receive during his stay at our port those courte. sies and attentions to which his recent services as well as his present character of a visiter entitle him. Sir William Gore Ouseley visited the Valorous yes. terday morning, and received the usuai honors of a salute from that vessel. He then weat on board the United States frigate Sabine, where he was received, in the absence of Capt. Adams, by Liout. Maxwell Woodhu' The marines ware drawn up in close order, and presented arms to the distinguished visiter on his arrival and de- parture, A salute was also fired, with admirable pre cision, from the Sabine, as he pulled off im his own ‘dont for the shore. The captain of the Britush steamer re. mained some time after them, and oa hia departure also tecetved the honor due bis rank. The Sabine ix one of old ships which lay so jong unlauncht at tho Navy Yard, and ia but re- cently in commission. She is, however, in perfect order, and presenta to the eye of even an ordinary ob- server every evidence of being well manned and officered. She hae a fine crow, a heavy and efetive armament, and is fully equipped for hard service, Captain Page received some of hia personal friends on board yesterday at noon, who had the pleasure of witnessing the ceremonies usual in these cases of the reception of notabilities. Bowlin, Commissioner (o Paraguay, and Samuel Ward, Baq., Se- eretary of Legation, ‘The crew consista of 420 men and 106 marines, It is believed on board that tho Sabine will sail today and all are anxious to be off. Te was remarked that the firet salute of the Vatorow should have been returned from Governor's Island, ao- Cording to the etiquette observed in all the ports of fire Fate Powers, but the officer in command is probably with out orders. Yesterday the salutes were—first, that o tho Valorons to Sir Gore Ouseley; next, that of the Sabine ‘and Inst, the reply of the Valorous to the Sabine, This reply was marked by a slight mistake in the time and the count of the Inst gun, but otherwise it was man-of-war like, The officers of the Sabine are all flne-looking men, and have @ high reputation in the service. We shall watch the progress of the Paraguay squadron with much interest. On Commander Page, who ia Captain of the fleet, a large responsibility rests, as he is not only to be ‘the pilot up the Rivor Plate, but is to lead and direct tho thickest of the fight.
