CITY POLITICS, Tommany Primory Electlovs—A Quiet ‘Time — Candidates on the Slate All Ri sht. The primary elections to choose delegates to County, Ju" edieiary; Congressional and Agsembly Conventions, held under the call of the Tammuny General Committee, tools place last nicht at the several ward headquarters through- out the city. Contrary to all expectation, no disturbance ocourred, nctwithsianding the lint of candidates that were in the field, aud whose frienis of course were nataraily ‘anxious to secure the severa! conventions to be chosen. So far as we have beard, there was no serious fight in any of he wards, and the scones so usual at primary elec tions were dispensed with eatirely on thiv oveasion, Let fot our citizens, however, congratulate themselyes on the outside decency which is beginning to characterize the primary meetings of the democracy. ‘The fact is, they are a greater farce thanever, and there was a much fuirer show for the masses of th» party during the reign of the shouldor hitters and rowdies than now. ‘Then the party who got the largest number of voles in tho ballot box, no matier by what means, was declared elected; but now ballot stating at woutt have dis. Itis well known that not the democratic voters of the district do the electing, but the inspectors, who re. turn whom they please, Outside poople have wondered a. the flerce strife which the choice of these officiais alway entails in Tammany Hail, but when they understand tha: these inspectors are the power behind tay ahron greater than that throne tteclf, they will seo how tho tmilk gets into the cocoa nut. ‘Thus, alough the reign o political reflianisin is about over in our primary moeuiugs, political rascality is more rampant than ever. ‘This cir er mstanes aceounis for the peaccabie character of th» clection of lastnight. The ‘slate’ had been mye, certain men knew weeks beforehand, who were to compose the e- verul conychtions aid Uiose conventions were sv coustituted ag to ensure the nomination ot the camlidate already chosen by the party autocrats.
