Interesting from Texas. OUR SAN ANTONIO CORRESPONDENCE. San Antonio, Texas, Sept. 4, 1858. Pert Lavacca—Roule to San Antonio—Condiion of the @ountry—San Antonio—The Mail Kouwe—Military Ar- rangements—Indians—Gen. Twiggs—Mining Companies to Awwna, dc. Tnoticed some time since an article in the HERALD pre- dicting that ere long the tide of fashionable travel during the warm season would set southward to the bathing and ‘watering places now fast coming into notice throughout the South. ‘Tho past season has seen this movement inaugurated, At the watering places on Lake Ponchartrain, at Galyes- ton, and cyen at Powderhorn and Lavacea, in spite of the wretched accommodations in some instances, a considera- ble number of travellers from the Northern and Middle Btates have temporarily sojourned, The climate of Texas, from the middie of June until the first of October, is de- licious. I have travelled all over the North American continent, but in no other portion have I ever found such delightful breezes, such @ pte, exhilarating atmosphere, which literally “bears healing upon ite wings.” Close, sultry weather is unknown; and of such pur! ty. is the air that beef exposed to the sun dries to an eatable condition, without the least perceptable taint. Indianola (now called Powderhorn) and Tavacea, have each admirable facilities for sea bathing, but no hotels nor society fit for refined people who have been accustomed to the luxuries of life. Between the two above places the Faget is unremitting and bitter, each conceiving itse great entrepot of Westorn "Texas, The steam Pe ‘ew Orleans stop at Powderhorn, and their freight ig scnt up to Lavacca, twelve miles above, by lighters, The Lavacea people claim that their harbor is the best snd most proper landing place for vessels and freight; and the arrival of # dredge boat, intended to be used in removing a certain impracticable sand bar, was lately eclebrated by a general spree, in which the entire popu- lation participated, including negroes and ‘“‘greasers.’? “Alb such demonstrations, and all eflurts to improve Lavacca harbor, are viewed by the Powderhorn denizens ‘with feclings of intense scorn; and thus the feud between the two places widens and deepens every week. I recom meud to any individual who feels an interest in tae mat ter, a series of soundings, made personally, as being the only method by which he can arrive at an accurate opinion as to the future destiny of the towns. Between Lavacca and the Gaudalupe river, on the way to San Antonio, the road passes over a “bog wallow prai- Tie,” covered with thick grass, and after a severe rain be- comes asea of mud and vegetation—the dread of all tra- vellers and the bane of all those who go up and down tho eountry with heavy trains. The Gaudalupe valley is some tour or five miles wide, well timbered and of amaz- ing fertility, but at present somewhat sickly. Cotton and’ sugar can be made in almost any desired quantity Wy ordinary cultivation. Beyond the Gaudalupe river, the land rolls away towards San An tonio in majestic bwells, covered with clumps of oak, pecan and hickory. In some the aspect, for miles in every direction, is thatot a cultivated and ‘aubaned ea try, lack- ingon!y dwellings to make the view a lovely counterpart ef the finest English scenery. Indeed, I have never seen anywhere in the Union more Dewutiful landscapes than on the road between Port Lavacca and San Antonio. Tho seil is of the best quality; in the valleys it is dark and rich, on the hill a light fertile loam, just adapted to wereal grains and other grasses. And yet, this fine coun- ary is almost uninhabited. It is only ‘now and thon, at Jong intervals, that you observe a house. There is a9 good water, except occasionally when a creck crosses the road, and even these creeks cannot be depended upon. Sometimes: during the rainy season they pour down an almort inundating flood, and in the dry season shrink en- urely away. Many attempts wo dig wells have failed, and the only feasible plan, in my humble opinion, is to buitd large tanks in the valleys, after the ancient Spanish cus- tom, to retain the water after heavy rains. The first step pecersary before constructing a railroad trom Lavacca to San Antonio, will be to secure a supply of water for the men and aniinals employed—otherwise in a dry season the ‘work would soon come to a paure, At present all the goods for San Antonio, (and the y..o tity is enormous), are carted from Lavaceo, one honired und forty miles distant, at rates varying from $1 to $5 per hundred, according to the season, Even ice, brought from ‘Boston, is transported to San Antonio, aud sold sometimes as high’ as fifty or seventy five cents per pa Nearly all this transportation business is in the hauds of Mexi cans, who use teams, and in good weather make the trip from’San Antonio to Lavacca and back in twelve or four- wen days. The road from Houston, across to San Autonio will, however, be the first one built; but pot fur some year, as the gpirit of enterprise seems to be stagnated in exas,s0 far as anything is concerned, except cotton und negroes. ‘The Germans, who are fast settling in Texas, are as missionaries, carrying thrift, industry and comfort wher ever they go, inveculating the lazy ‘natives’? with ideas of civilization, which they never before possessed. With the exception of Quebec, there is no city on the eontinent which possesses: greater attractions to the in- telligent traveller and antiquarian than San Antonio, as it abounds in historical reminiscences and traditions of the early settlement of the Western world, More than a hundred and thirty years ago those heroic pioneers of Civilization, the Jesuit fathers, erected their missions on the bake of the San Antonio Fiver, andthe tail, ghostly ruins remain as milestones of the wonderful pro _ which has characterized this whole region. True, is & rough region now, with the half-subdued Indian lnperng wpen the frontiers in constant conflict with his Saxon wonquerors; but there are not the same seenes as when the bells of Saint Juan Monastery rang out their ev ng chime as daylight failed ‘in San Antonio Fan Antonio is the great apa depot of Western ant a large part of Central Texas. Here are soune of the most extensive outfitting establishments ip the South or West, where every description of goods, arms, material and sup plies may be purchased for the frontiers or for home con sumption. Of course, prices are at California figures; but We take into consideration the great expense of freight and | the risks of transportation. The buildings are a mixture | of styles—Spanish, Mexican and American—with here and there @ Beat little cottage, whose exterior tells that its owner came from the “fatherland.’’ The Spanish build ings are old, decayed and gloomy like the Alamo and the ‘ola Miesion Church in the Grand Plaza. Side by side with the sickly Mexican ‘“hacal,”’ thatched and windowless, the modern American warehouse towers exultingly, a type of | the civilization that is destined to overshadow the Aztec In the Mexican quarter of the town the morals and of the inbabitants are free and easy enough to sativ(y the most ultra of the modern free love school. Chil- dren play about with no other clothing than their own well tanned skins, and men and women bathe ja the river together without the incumbranee of dress. This morn- me, while waiking along by Uhe river, a few rods from the water's edge, I met a stalworth Me going to bathe, leading a litte boy and girl, without a rag of clothin, among the party. A short distance further, in the door « thatched but, eat an oki woman whose only garment was a fort of vkirt of remarkable brevity at both ends, Fearing further developements of the same sort, I re- treated to a more civilized quarter of the city ‘San Antonio has a population of some 10,000, mixed and mixed again—a little of everything, inelud- mg a good stock of the German element. Lager bier is retailed at ten cents per gines, and, as <3 weual, Germans monopolize van gardening — muk fortunes. Dosiaess, at which the making The mail leaves San Antonio the fe exch month, in connection with the 1 which arrives at Sau Antonio every da Fort Hadeon, Fort Lancaster, Fort Davie, Paso, Fort Fillmore, La Mesilia, Teacson, Fort Yu va, San Diego and San Francieco. The proprietor; this exten sive line are G. H. Giddings, of San Antonio, Texas, and -s FE. Doyle, of San Diego. The agont at San Antonio ie M. B. Bramhall New York, Gol. Wood is the General Superintendent of the line, a gentleman of fine Duniness talent and indomitable energy. Indeed, when we consider that the tine Lae been in operation more than one year, and although exposed to many viem#itudes, has mot once failed, great oredit is due te all concerned. To correct, through your widely circulated columus, some of the errencous ideas which exist in the States concerning this route, I will give some detailed information concern. ‘ ™his mail coach leaves Lavacca every day for San An tonin; distance one hundred and forty miles; fare $14. On the @h and 24th of each month the coaches leave San Antonio for San Diego, making the trip in thirty the utmost, and often in twenty-three days s tine to Ei Paso is ten days, and to Tnesen sixteen days. Tho ‘coaches are built especially fur the servico, and are so ar ranged that travelers can lie down, or sit im almost any weition, Beyond Fort Clark, which is the commence ment of the Indian conntry, one hundred and thirty miles from fan Antonie, a guard of #iX meanted meu accompa tes cach coach, ‘Passengers aro allowed \forty pounds of baguage, aro furnished with board, t required to sane guard. For extra baggage the rates are forty cents pound to El Paso, and one dollar per pound to San Trego The mail averages nine bamired pownds in werght, and is changed ten times on the route, The la Js perfectly safe, cheap, and in every way the mos) desi- ra overland to California. == For — per forming tho service the contractors reorive $150, 000 «per year. They are kuown throwrhout all this region of country as gentlemen of wealth, pasion and energy, and will never allow their line to be rivalled by any route across the Plains. Tn relation to Indian troubles, lean only express the candid belief that they are on the increase at thie time, ‘but consist principally of thefts. The Camanche seldom attacke a Well armed and watehefal party, and where trains are surprised it has generally been on account of Kroes careless on the part of the owners of conduct ‘ore. The mail coaches have not been molested for a year, = the conductors aay that, with doe vigiance, any train i perfectly cafe. Texas has been singularly neglected’ by her Senators and Representatives in Congress. They have never pressed appropriations for military roads, nor has any work ever boen done on th inail line, except by soldiers of the regular army for their own convenience. The army otticers stationed here de- clure that the few troops at each post render operations inst the Indians very limited, and the distance between e a Jeaves a large tract of country entirely unpro- tected. Telegraphic Communication Between Cuba and Florida, The Fpoca, a Madrid ne paragraph on this project: ‘A company composed of Mr. Horace Tebbets, of New York, and Srs. Torrerosand Lama,of Havana, was formed in 1856 for the purpase of connecting, by means of an clectric cable, the Island of Cuba and Florida. The Captain Ge ral of the Island, who was applied to for a coucession for twenty-tive years, s : ject, and immediately addressed to the Cabinet of Mi the hecessary documents for obtaining the royal sanction. The Spanish government, whilst approving the project pre- sented to it, adjourned its definitive adherence to the time when the immersion of the Atiantic cable betwee lencia and Newfoundland, then just. beginning, sho: terminated. K seems that in view thereof Mesers. Horace Tebbets & Co. are about to set to work. From Key West to Havana there are seventy miles, each mile costing five hundred dollars. On its part the company of the electric telegraph engages itself to establish a telegraphic tine between Key West and Savannah, Ga.,and in this way Havana and New York would be ouly a few minutes dis tant from each other. From Havana the cable fixed at the Cape of San Antonio, would be extended tw Yucatan, a distance of forty miles, aud from this latter point con- tinned ag far as Mexico. Anoti = secondary tino, tr versing Nicaragua, would terminate at Panama, a di tance of one thousand one hundred miles. Lastly tepec and Santiago once connected, the cable woul: t "he prolonged to San Francisea, which is distant three hun- dred miles from the latter point. in before ‘he ySpaper, contains the following The Atiantic Telegraph. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HEKALD. In the New York papers, Oetober 2, in a communic; tion by Tal. P. Shaffher, claiming the conception of t Atlantic cable, the following language occurs — “In October, 1853, the National Telegraph Review, edit- ed by Mr. James ID). Reid, a general telegraph superin tendent, published an article, noticing my connection with an Atlantic telegraph. The editor had no confidence in the success of the enterprise, and ridiculed the idea.”” ‘The language used by me conveyed properly no such idea, except as connected with Mr. Shaifner’s under- taking. The first sentence shows an ex ive interest in the matter en the part of the seientitic world, ren dered greater by the Berryman soundings from the Dol ring the summer of 1853, by which, for the first eanic eable was fount to have a bed on which then, by ingenious machinery, epth ascertained. Until then, no ing laid, having any distinct plan or ta, was entertained. Mr. Shaffver, it is troe, rushed to the conclusion that a cable could be laid, weighing six or eight tons per mile. ldoubted Mr. Shaffner's ability to raise a company who could carry out such an enterprise until science had re- leased it from the difficulties attending it. It would have required eight Niagaras and eight Agamemuons to have laid sees such as Mr. Shaffer posed. I doubted ‘apital to such an ex 1, T stated, ‘ when these undertakings, however, are entertained in sober earnest, we will bend to them with the intensest interest, = wish the parties engaged in them the utmost success, pecially, our country the glory of the accomplish #0 stupendous a work.” Is this * ridiculing the mes vl m— , Lendorsed Mr, Shaffner’s enthusiastn, and quoted woody wondrous pascage of his, printing it in caps>— y ebb and flow—the billows may surge with perth icebergs may tower their white mantied Forte’ Wgh inthe. kien Sand deep in the Priny aea—the heavens toy, let loose the loud rolling thunder, and the earth heave up He Gery lava, but just aa sure, a8 ining elements of nature exist orkia revolve, America and Europe will be connected by an electric card !
