We have quite an in- crease to the population in the town; all those who were drowned out along the San Juan, seemingly, are afraid to retarn. Some of the islands inthe river have been en tirely romoved. The tattered troop of native soldiers, whe ded from Fort Castetlo during the rising of the river, have returned, but in a miserable condition, They are without ammunition, and would doubtless fly at the Fumored approach of 'a foe. i ‘Whe Saratoga and Savannah are still in the port doing nothing, apparently waiting for something to turn up. They are not over friendly with the shore, seldom landing, and apparently much in dread of that ship or fish fever. ‘The report is that they will as soon as necessary clear the river of every *‘greaser”’ soldier and put the whole route from the Atlantic to the Pacitic in a singular state of secu- rity, hereafter not very cheaply to be interfered with. The advantages of this route are unquestionably greater than that of l’anama, with some security to life, with Bealth, comfort and expedition ‘There are some misbelievers here—doubting everything they hear and see—still incredulous about the opening of the transit. They say ‘tis a capital move for capital alone; That Joe White bas not the most distant intention of re pening the route; that it is al! a sham, and the next news will be the sale of all the stock to Vanderbilt, whose wishes are to seal it up and keep it like a close barred gate. These remarks are from individuals who have grown seared in waiting, and splenetic through intermit Zenta, and expected to be jaundiced. As for myself, I be- ything which causes merely a slight distinction cjudices between us. ‘The boges government are still collecting their duties from ai! unfortunate traders that may chance to arrive. Tt appears a subject worthy of remark, as everybo: knows it has been again and again pronounced a free port, and the partics who are now enforcing these collections require tw be honestly, rigdeously and legally endowed, Colanel Cauty is hi e, resting quietly upon his layrels Since the English warned him away from Point Scott, his Costa Rica route or road does not appear to be progressing very briskly ter the English claim the Point for the Mosquito, they would not hesitate to make » Jose.
