For most sports, there is a season, but for Astic Smurements, pummelling and deing pammolted—i.¢., | Breaking “oes, coloring eyes, slashing cheeks, smashing, Meet, general bruising, and other such harm?ess atten ‘Wone—there seems to be no particular month of the year gonsecrated. Season is nothing. Summer, winter, spring, ‘eutumn, are alike to the gentlemen who practice Wo ‘manly art’’—the opportunity i all that is Tequired. That found they are always ready to do the amiable to friend or foc, To find that opportunity is sometimes difficult enough; still an aspirast for fame will rise now ‘and again, a political squabble, or the discevery Of a few “green uns”? with Kite Drakes and pleay of dollars to Btake on a favorite, are alse facts that do sotelimes gt ‘on W the page of history, and from the one*er the other wwpring the nouristment for the prize ting. ‘What has led to the mateh betwees the revowned Joho Morrissey and the now ne less popaiar persemage, Joba C. Heenan, alias the “Benicia Boy,” is somewhat ditflcult to wet ai—a kind of foreshadowing of which took place last ‘evening. Fis neither of the three incentives above al taded to, but seems= mixture of them al! The Bendcie Boy is dowbtiess an aspirant for fame. He looks beyond Rhrashing soundi-and completely Jean Morrissey, im thio, woming vontest, to'an encounter witk the renownGd Tom Sayers, who Wears the champion’s belt of England. “There is something of politics in 4% too. In the hall, tabt ‘evening, one ef the particular fiends of Heenan had -it “Uhet he wase hard shell, and hed lately been in the'Cue- tom House, while Morrissey wee a soft. shell, and Specialy Yent the weight of his influenen (?) in the election of cur esteemed Mayor, but of the #ature of that shel! There ts something of a fecal charac- ter nbeut it also. Morrissey bas been keeping a.public house at Enst Troy, smd being naturally ready for a “rough and tumbie,’’ amd not over particular whese cra- nittm he would sound, bis swagger and pexchant gave um- Drage to his acquaintances in West Troy. None of them Deing anxious ‘to draw the badger,” they bothought them- elves of a young stripling reared among them who had geome to California; the idea worked through tbe brain on to paper, and the Benicia Boy was requested to return to ‘Weert Troy. Soon after his arrival some one told Morrissey what Heenan had said, and in a frieadly way (no doubt of i) some other one—not unlikely the same—told Hee- man what Morrissey bad said, and gradually they began - &o feel tunning about each other. it led te swagger and challenges, which took some time to ripen into the drawn up rules for the contest for the championship of America and $2,500 aride. At length to this i came in July last. Two hundred and fitty dollars, as @ forfeit, was then Btaked. and from that to now each has added to the first Bum till the prescribed amount ig all but siaked—wil! be, of course, some time before the day of batile—the 20th of next month To witness the Benicia Boy and his trainer, the renown. e@ Aaron Jones, of London, have a “set<o,”? was the ob- ject of the gathering last evening at Mozart Hall. There Was no programme of the proceedings, consequently the management caused no disappointment by the non- appearance of distinguished expectants; and, once the fifteen hundred dollars taken at the door, they very wisely concluded not to give too much for the money. In this they pleased a portion of the audience doubtless, particularly those who ‘were inconvenienced by the clouds of emoke that arose from the consumption of the nauseous weed. At eight o'clock the hall was made to resound with the applause which greeted thezappearance of Mr. William G. ‘Taylor, of Boston, on the raised platform, as “master of the ceremonies.” This gentleman is a professor of the art in that city, and had come to visit the Benicia Boy be- fore the departure of the latter for Canada, and for this kind attention was honored as above. With a slight Sutroductory speech he introduced to the admir ing maioote young Dwyer and Welch. Atthe call of Le, both approached the centre of the platform, shook hands, as the law requires, and immediately, like ban- tams, dug away at cach other with considerable interest- ing kindvess. During their performance of eight or ten mi- Butes they seemed to enjoy considerably a smack now and again that made thoir eyes to twinkle abd the andience to applaud yociferously. A few rounds of their heaviest hit- ting satisfied everybody, and themselves particalarly, away they vanished, bowing and scraping to the audience, evidently thanking that easily gratified mass for the kind- bese of looking on Following them came Tovey and Morris Leonard, Holmes and McIntyre, Joe Coburn aud Heffernan, and “ffthiy and lastly,” Aar 08 and the Benicia Bor were re ceived with loud and prolonged applause. The first four pairs Bit out with bearty good wil abi. game, and took ‘whh congiderabie freedom; but the gems of the evening, or the “big gons,” as Professor Taylor called them on introdue- tion, were very careful. They had five rounds. On the fret three they walked round and round, secking their op portunity, feiting and manceuvring, but both were well Satisfied they could not throw off their guards with any vantage to their faces, and without making the “(ar to ;) they got to the ropes for breathing spells.
