M. ‘The stock market this morning was duli, and as to Prices irregular. We can only remark of it what has, beea repeated almost daily in these columns for the pastfew ‘weeks, viz., that its leading feature is the absence of out- side speculation, and that the business of putting stocks and knocking them down is inal and be considered profitable enough ‘we shail soon see, Now York Central opened this morn- ing ate dectine of 34 from youterday’s closing price. Ii ‘was expected, seemingly, that the bears would attack it im force; but they bold altogether aloof, and the bulls ‘were enabled to put it up 4 9 34 per cent, A coupie of thousand shares changed hands. The atempt made by tome speculative brokers to infuse some whole some activity into the Weatern railroads, and by circulating erroneous stories about the crops and railroad earnings, to induce the public o buy their stocks, does not yet seom very promising. The decline in Rock Island, which began yesierday, continued this morning ; Galena was 34 lower; 80 was Toledo, the Michigan stocks wore barely steady. Illinois Central, whose business [as every oae knows is no criterion for that of the roads running East aud West, is the only Weatern line whose earnings aie uot at the preent time very seriously behind those of last year. Reacing was steady at yeeterday’s price; tho balls in this stock demand unusual differences wo take seller's contracts, and transactions mre limiied in coasequence. ‘There was little more business done in Hudsou River this morning. The business of the road does not vary from the estimates; but the stock is tied up in very strong bands, aud is very scarce indeed. Pacific Mail Steamabip rose this morning 1 per cent. Thore is begiauing to be quite a demand for this stock from tho bears tor delivery; the short gules which appoar in the printed list of sales are probably renewals. Panama ‘was 4 per cent betier. In bank stocks the largest busi- ness was done in American Exchange, at an advance of nearly one per cent over last reported sale. Tho busi- ness in bonds was vousuahy light, and without material change in price. The raarket closed generally atroog. At the second board the chief feature was a sudden rise of two per cent in Pacific Mail, one of the most variable stoeks on the list. The business generally was light, but prices as @ rule rather sympathized with the movement in Pacific Mail. “The closing prices at Kowalski’s wore:— Central, 79% a 80; Erie, 18 } Hudson, 285; a %; Roading, 49 a 3; Michigan Central, 58 a ; Southern, 233% a 24; Panama, 114% a 115; Mlinols, 7636 a 77; Galena, 8524 & 3g; Toledo, 3434 a 3%; Rock Island, 72'¢ 8%; La Crosse, S34 + %; Pacific Mail, 9134092, The market cloged sien: The excbayger at the Bank Clearing House t's morn. ing were $14,062,524 61, and the baiaaces $1,161,100 74 The MeiropoLtas ceriiicates remmun at $5,000.
