No 9 Vesey street, Astor Douse Trunses eat suvvorters ——— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIA MONEY MARGET. Tuvaspay, Sept. 2—6 P. M. The street had hardly recovered this morning from the holiday of yesterday. Many brokers were out of town. The non-arrival of the Cunard steamer con- tributed likewise to check operations, though, ao far as her commercial advices are concerned, we have had them already from St. Johns, in the summary of the Galway steamer. It is hoped, however, that she and the succeeding steamers will bring fresh orders from the other side, and that the brokers who have been buyers on speculation for some days will thus be enabled to shift the load. It is calculated that the news of the peace with China must operate as the stimulus required to set speculation agoing on the other side; and it is confidently believed that any speculation whatever will include, among its prominent features, a free investment in American securities, The only stock that was dealt in to any ex'ent this morning was New York Ceatral, which opened at a decline of 4 per cent from Saturday's price, and did not rally throughout the session. The chief buyers were shorts. The bulls have concluded to wait to see what comes of the meeting of the rail- way presidents, which is expected to take place here on Saturday or Monday, before buying any more for the rise. Erie was 4 lower, with, as usual, very slight transactions. Reading declined about as much, with sales of only 300 shares. The Western railways were all lower. Galena fell off $ per cent; Rock Island, $; Toledo, 1; Michigan South- ern, 4; preferred do., 4; Micaigan Central, {; Mil- wankie and Mississippi, J; La Crosse and Milwaa- kie, 3. It is to be regretted that the newa from the West should be so uniformly preja- dicial to the railway interest. In many parts of the West the falling cf in the crops will entirely deprive the railways of business this winter. Reference has already been made to the falling off in the Rock Island earn- ings. It is believed that the Galena will be an equal sufferer. At the present conjuncture this is peculiarly annoying. Panama sold at abont the closing price on Tuesday. Pacific Mail was lower, without short sales. Among the coal stocks, Penn- sylvania is selling at 75}; Delaware and Hudson at last quotation, 984; Cumberland -is offered at 18} a 19. In bank stocks little was done except in Park, of which over a hundred shares were taken at an advance over last quotations. There were very few transactions in State or railroad bonds. Missouris are again a shade lower. The market closed dull. At the second board New York Central was active at a further decline of 4; sellers’ options at the de- cline were freely pressed on the bulls. The Western stocks were without change from the morning. Pacific Mail was very active at an advance of §a/ over the morning price. (La Crosse land grants were } lower. The closing prices were as follows: Central, 794 a 79); Erie, 17] a 17f; Hudson, 28 @ 284; Michi- gan Central, 577 a 584; Southern, 23) a 234; Pana- ma, 114} a 114]; Galena, 834 a 84; Toledo, 34{ a 34); Rock Island, 73 a 73); Pacific Mail, 88} a 88j.
