BONEY MARKET. Mowpay, Ang. 30—6 P. M. The Bank statement made up this afternoon com- pares as follows with the staiement which was com- piled a week since: | Week spaion Leone Specie. Oirculat'n Deporits. 23... $170. 968,291 28,549,609 7,480,084 104,609,668 128, 84°624 27 £17006 7/468,846 108-028.178 Decreane.. $285,807 13,838 61,480 | As will be seen, the movemunt is very slight in all departments. The decline in specie is more than was looked for as the export and drain into the sub- Treasury hardly amounted, altogether, to over half a million, while the Banks are doubtless receiving something from their correspondents Fast and West. The California remittance only counted one day in the week; so that, in fact, the banks hold to-day about twenty-nine iillions instead of $27,817,006. The decline in loans is a proper symptom. Though a great part of the loans included under that head in the bank statement is no doubt made up of the new government, and otber undoubted securities which are beld as collateral for loans, still the mercantile community is apt to pay more attention than is per haps right to mere figures, and the nearer the bank loans approach to $130,000,000, in a time of dellvess like the present, the les# inclined will prodent men Le to enlarge their ventures. The decline in depostta is larger than was expected, and serves to confirm the fears of the timid. By the arrival of the cit we have news from Burop: } that which was telegraphed from Cape Race yester day. Conecls closed, at 3 P. M., on the 18th, firm, ab 96) a O09. ares were inactive. The French three per cents are quoted at 69f. 35c. a Gf. 45¢ The letters from Paris, saysthe Manchester Guaré dian, August 18, mention a general expectation tha’ the Bank of France would, either that week or the next, reduce its rate of discount from 34 to 3 per cent. The new India four per cent loan of £5,579,000 was taken, all but £398,500, at an average, according to the London Times, of 974. This is but little better than the United States government has just done. It would appear that the amount tendered exceeded very slightly the amount of the loan ; the bids under 97, which, according to the announcement, were thrown out, would seem only to have amounted to some £800,000. All other bids were successful. The London Times reports more demand for money in the discount market, but plenty to be hed on stocks at 14. The latest quot i tions of American securities, in the Times of 17th, are as follows:— Grand Trunk and Great Western of Canada were heavy. Buflalo and Lake Huron jeft off 108. lower. Nor is there any Teason to expect a speedy recovery from a depres- sion and decline in business, which are due to such radical causes as the short crop and the unsettled troubles of last fall. The pros- pect is that the receipts of the Galena, the Rock Island, the Toledo and all the lines of the extreme ‘West will continue to fall off for some time to come. Bat if the bears sell them as recklessly as they have done, it is doubtful whether the stock will decline. Central and Erie were maintained at last quotations, with a light business. Reading was sparingly dealt in at Saturday’s closing prices, buyers evincing their want of confidence in the future by making a differ- ence of a1 per cent in the price of stock bought for cash and stock bonght seller’s option. Pacific Mail continues to improve under the influence of the Fraser River discoveries. The sales of bank stocks were small, and at last quotations, In Missouri sixes the business done was pretty large at fall prices; the stock closed with an improving tendency. Of other State stocks and railroad bonds there is nothing to remark. LaCrosse land grants were in demand at last quotations. At the second board the business done was very small, but prices were fully sustained. New York Central was 4 a j higher. In the Western stocks hardly any transactions took place. Each party at the board seems to be waiting for the other to “come on.” Prices were much the same after the close of the second board. The closing quotations, as re- pated by Kowalski, were:—New York Central, 803 @ j; Erie, 18} a 3; Reading, 49} a 3; Michigan Southern, 244 a §; Panama, 1143 a 3; Llinois Cen- tral, 77 a }; Galena, 84] a 85; Toledo, 3534; Rock Island, 743 a}; Pacific Mail, 88389. Parties interested say that it will show the immense abun- dance of the guano, and the complete accessibility of the island through the moorings laid down under his direction. lt is expected that veasels will be enabled to load from thirty to fifty tons per day with present facilities, and more hereafter.
