The stock exchange to-day opened with considera- ble strength, and there appeared to be a prospect of an important advance in prices. One of the prin- cipal operators, and one who, some years ago, was necessarily the leader un one side or the other, turn- ed to day from the bear to the bull side, and bought largely of New York Central and other promiaent specalative securities. A few minor operators fol- lowed his jead, and the conseynence was a very brisk demand for stocks. This did not last, however, till the close of the session. On the second call many stocks showed signs of weakness, and sellers submitted toa decline in order to effect sales. New York Central, for instance, which closed last evening at 79j, opened thie morning at 80, rose to 804, and closed at 79 with a declining tendency. The aggregate business of the morning board foota up over 3,500 shares. Reading, which was the next most active stock, seems at present to be chiefly sold by the Philadel- phia and English holders, who have been alarmed by the falling off in the tonnage (16 per cent last week) and the increase in the expenses. It opened at 494, an advance of 4 over yesterday's price, bat declined steadily to 48/ a 48}, and was very dall at the close. Some 3,200 shares changed hands, showing the bokl- ness of the party which has undertaken to sustain the market price by purchasing all the stock that offers. Erie opened at an advance of 4 over yesterday's closing price, bat soon receded to the old mark. There is no further news respecting the proposed connection between the Erie and Central, nor will there be until after the first September meeting of the Erie directors. The Western stocks were also generfily better. Galena closed igher than yesterday's closing price; Rock Island was i better; Toledo barely held its own; Michigan Southern improved {; Michigan Central improved i; Milwaukie and Mississippi fell back 4; Pacific Mail,in which the dealings are solely for invest- ment, was j better; Panama was not strong at last quotations. There was less business than usual in bank stocks; only o sale of 50 Peoples’ and 13 Nassau. The business in government and State stocks was larger than usnal, Of the new United States fives $15,000 were taken at 3j, and large lot of Virginias and Missouris, the former ata decline of { from yesterday's price, the latter at last quotations. Of the railroad loan market there is nothing to remark. The general market closed dull and tame.
