FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Tusapay, Angust 24—6 P.M. The representatives of the Central ani Frie Rail- ways who assembled with their friends at the St. Nicholas yesterday, to consider the means of adj ing the pending quarrel between those roads, met again this morning, and after some discnasion ar rived at a basisof negotiation. The outside pressare vpon both roads bad been too severe to be withstood, and when the negotiations were set on foot, neither was found willing to take the responsibility of break ing them off by preposterous demands. It fs report- ed that the understanding which has been arrived at is to the effect that the old tariff dhal! be re establis! ed with regard to freight on both Erie aad Cenirs and that the old rules with regard to the employ ment of ranners, &c., ehall be revived. In the event of either road violating these rules it ll pay a fine to the other, an umpire being chosen beforehand to decide whether or no the fine has been duly incurred. Nothing has yet been de termined in regard to passenger traffic; tion will ehortly be held between the four leasir lines to the West to dispose of this object. It mus be borne in mind that Yhis understanding i+ merely Preliminary— that it is, in fact,a mere basis for a future agreement. When the bargain shall hay been dnty n form byt i t «'ligerent cov @ conver Aro wr and ratified event ‘ As compared with the price current yesterday af- ternoon, New York Central rose this morning j per cent; Erie, }; Rock Island, 3; Toledo, }; Michigan Southern, 4; do. preferred, 1 percent. Galena, Illinois Central, Panama, Reading, and one or two other stocks, were steady. Pacific Mail, which reached the very high figure of 883 last evening, receded this morning to 873. The operations in this stock are purchases for investment; there is very little speculation in it. In the bank stocks there was less business than usual, but no change of prices—anless indeed, we note a sale of American Exchange Bank at 2 belqw the last reported sale. The new govern- ment fives eold, this morning, at } above yesterday's prices. With this exception, there was no change in the State stock and bend market to note. Jn the afternoon stocks were a shade better. New York Central rose {; Reading, }; Erie, }; Michigan Southern, 3; do. preferred, 3; Galena, j; Rock Islagd, 3, &c. The business done, however, was light, and when the bears had made their purchases, the market reacted.
