MONEY MARKET. Sarvapay, August 21—6 P. M. There was rather more activity in some specula- tive stocks thie morning. The Arabia’s news, con- taining, as it did, information of more speculative feeling in the London market, aud of a rather better inquiry for American stocks, must be regarded as the chief camse of the Improvement. Our brokers lave so long expected an era of specalation to grow out. of the plethora of money in Wali street, that every event which may be construed favorably is by them regarded as the signal for the rise; on the least’ provocation they rash headlong as buyers into the market, fearful lest the public should have got there before them, and determined to make a handsome profit this time. Hitherto, unhappily, the public have not been liberal enough to step in and relieve the buils of stocks 80 bought. Stocks opened this morning very strong and firm. Central, especially, which is ex- pected to be scarce at the opening on Monday, was in demand at an advance of j over yesterday's closing price, and before the close of the call im- proved another | a |. The contest betweea the balls and bears in this stock is becoming very inte- restivg; the result will turn upon the fruit of the efforts which it is proposed to make to reconcile the Erie and Central. Over three thonsaud shares changed hands this moraing. Erie was 4 better, without particular activity. The Western roads, notwithstanding the falling of in business consequent upon the poverty of the crops, shared in the general improve- ment. Galena was } better; Rock Island, |; Toledo was steady; Michigan Central 1 per cent better; Southern, j. In Reading the contest appears to be narrowing itself down to a fight between a few friends of the management on one side, and the public on the other. One after another, all the principal operators are turning to the bear side. Panama was } better; Pacific Mail, ja! We note sales of Canton at 20; of Cumberland Coal at 17{[—an improvement from last sale. The business in bank stocks was small, at full prices. Merchants’ sold one per cent above last price quoted. Among the railroad bonds there was little business done. —_ Illinois Centrals are 4 per cent higher; the stock being also held at an improvement, on the strength of expectations from England. Missouri sixes sold, sellers’ option, } below the cash price. Tennessee sixes are also } lower. With the exception of these two, there was but little business done in State securities, At the close the market softened, and sellers, after the board, were forced to make concessions averaging j per cent to make sales, In the afternoon (there being no second board) Messrs. Groesbeck’ Hoyt quote bids as followa:— Central, 78); Erie, 17); Reading, 48}; Michigan Central, 58; Southern, 22; Panama, 114; Dlinois Central, 77; Galena, 83; Toledo, 34; Rock Island, 72); Pennsylvania Coal, 74; Pacific Mail,85}.
