Surprise may, perhaps, be created by the unusual increase of loaus. Ata time when it is so bard to lend money and 40 little business is doing, the banks secm more than usually fortunate to be able to increase their loans at the rate of a million a week. The payments into the SabTreasury for duties, which were rather larger than usual last week, will, together with the foreign export, account for the falling off in specie. Some, judging from the peculiar features of the statement made public a week since, had imagined that the loss of specie shown would be much greater than itis. If we the bullion in the city will be found to amount to the large aggregate of nearly $41,000,000; and this, with a California steamer soon to arrive, perhaps with a shipment swelled by some driblets of gold from Frazer river. We note no particuler change this week in the position of the respective banks composing the Clearing House Association. ‘The business at the stock board this morning was small. Dulness was the feature of the day, though prices had rather a tendency to improve. The least sign of purchases by outsiders frightens the specu- lative sellers to death. Should any general specala- tion set in, such as we had in March, it would not be surprising to see stocks rise two and three per cent ina day. As compared with the prices current on Saturday morning, several of the speculatives were better today. New York Central was } higher; Erie, j; Reading, 1 per cent; Panama, 1; Galena, |; Rock Island, }. The Michigan roads and Cleve- | land and Toledo were steady. Pacifio Mail sold today at 84, dividend off, which is equal to 90, dividend on: the dividend, as we stated here- tofore, is 6 per cent. The transactions in bank stocks were light and without change in prices. Nor was there any such business or change in price in the bond market as would justify particular remark. La Crosse bonds sold at better prices to-day than for some days past; the improvement since yesterday is equal to one per cent. The market closed rather firmer, and after the board better prices were bid. There was a decided improvbment in prices at the second board, thongh transactions were limited. Reading rose 1j per cent; Rock Island, 3; New York Central, |; Pacific Mail,},&c. The closing prices, as quoted at Kowalski’s , were:—Central, 794; Erie, 174; | Hudson, 28); Reading, 48}; Michigan Central 501; Panama, 119§; Mlinois, 74; Galena 85); Rock Island, 76; Toledo, 35h. The market closed in- active. bot bardly with a declining tendency. ‘The exchanges at the Bank Clearing Honse this morning were $17,704,808 04, the balances $918, 862 63.
