Is it conceivable that sir E. B. Lytton, not having set eyes on his wife for seventeen years, and Jeavivg her to live and suffer and complain during all that time upon £400 a year, suddenly became #0 tenderly wolicitous on her behalf as to require that ail that was “best and kindest’ should bedone woher? Way is Lord Shattebury imtroduced? for any genuine or honest purpose? or to give the shelter of his sanctity to the de feated perpetration of a cruel outrage? Mephistopheles might envy the jus which suggeeted the meation of Lord Shaf‘sbury as the advieer and referee of Sir E. B. Lytwp. But what famcbiefly anxious to know is whother the reference to Lord shaftebury, and aif the recent steps taken in this case, were not the result of the pubilcity given to the outrage «n Lady Lytton, and especially of aa intimation of a an emrnd and imperative character re- ceived from an illustrious pereonage, whose hoaored name I am ioih to introduce into thie discussion. People tay that this 1s 0, and that the delayed kindness—if it be kindness—-was compulsory. The certificates appended to Mr. Lytton’s letter are not properly “certificates.” They are intended as opens for the conduct of Sir Edward Balwer Lytton. sat, though put forward with thts view, they prove nothing in his favor. ihe atmple fact they substantiate is, that the state of Lady Lywon’s mina “is such as w jastity her liberation from restraint.” If that be so, we are war- ranted in asuing whether the state of Lady Lytton’s mind could also be auch ag to warrant her being out under re. atraint? It ia easy tosee that the “ ica.c”? of Dr. Forbes Winslow is but an answer to cortaw questions cleverly put by Mr. Edwin James, the learned counsel, who was strangely employed by Mr. Lytton, and whose object was to extract trom Dr. Winelow everything that he could on behalf of Sir Edward, and noth’ inst him. And yet the answer, although not travelling out of the range of the questions which evidently were pat, is unfavorable. Dr. Winelow does indeed say that “apon the facts that he bas asceriained were submited to Sir Edward, and upon the certificates of the medical men whom he was advised to consult,” the course he has pursued ‘cannot be considered as barab and unjustila- bie.” But this ‘sa part of toe question upon which we are all competent to form an opinion; and if it should ap. od that the facta submitted to Sir Edward Lytton were facts suggested by himeelf, and the medical men on whose certificates he acted were employed by him (which is the fact), Dr. Forbes Winslow’s opinion upon this part of the question goes for nothing. The more one inquires into the case, carefully listening to what has been written on bobalf of the defendant, the more convinced one becomes thet ® great wrong (which {t le Dow stiempted to gloes over) has been done That wrorg bas been done, not to Lady Lytton only, but to society, Her wrata may be appeased, her personal wounds may have received a plaieter, and ber personal friends may have been flattered and cajcled into silence, or even into denying what they themselves nave writen; ‘but is the public d, or the wrong that has deen dono to society atoned for, while the case of Lady Bulwer Lytton remaina uniovestigated, and the conduct of her husband escapes official and public censure’ Is any one of us sate #0 long as the law ite the “next of kin’? to do what bas been done unto Lady Lydon? ‘The Daily raph has nobly urged the necessity of an alteration of the law.
