MONEY MARKET, Wapxrspay, July 28—6 P. M. Some anxiety ts beginning to be felt with regard to the amount of Treasury notes held by the banke Tt is generally supposed that the New York city banks hold some ten millions of Treasury notes among them ; and that in their weekly statements they count these as specie. It is further conjectared that half as much more is held by the banks outaide of this city. Objection is made on principle to the habit of calling treasury notes epecie. They are not «specie nor anything like it. In the event of a run upon a bank, the patio-stricken public would not be eatiefied with Treasury notes instead of gold. And if a bank may class Treasury notes as because they are redeemable in bullion, why might it not, hy the same process, include among its spe- cle any promissory note which the maker specified that he would pay in specie? If, in fact, our banks only bold 25,000,000 in apecie and $10,000,000 of Treasury notes, instead of the $35,000,000 which they report, there is a wonderfal amount of miscon ception in x being caused by it and grievous errors are Why should pot the banks honestly ey how specie they contain and how much treasury * The opwarl m ment on the Steck Exchange continued throughout the morning's operations. ‘There were a few outside orders, very few; but still enough to warrant the belief that the market is be- ing closely watched by the public, and that, should the rise of the pust few deys be maintained, and the upward movement kept going, participation by the outside operators may be expected in the business of the Stock Exchange, There a time when so mach money was lying this city. It is understood that, independently of the published advertisement, the peculiar wording of which has led to some remark, the directors have lately assured private individuals, in the most positive and unequivocal manser, that the August interest will be paid. It would appear that on the Stock Exchange, at all events, but lit. tle faith is placed in their assurance. After the board large sales of the land grant bonds were made at 25. The business done in bank stocks was light; the only large sale being American Exchange, which sold at j below the last quotation. Among the State bonds Missouri sixes were the only ones which were very active; neither in them nor in any of the other State securities is there any change in pricatg note. Illinois Central bonds were a shade betoan market closed tame, and con- copious Were by sellers after the board. Al ibe Biwrd the reaction became decided- ly fol &' t was produced by a further de- cline? centin La Crosse land grant bonds, making a decline of 9 per cent this day. This, aided by the natural desire of parties who have been operating for a rise to realize their profits caused a decliae of $a j percent in the general mar- ket. There was hardly an average amount of busivess done at the board. Reading was the only stock dealt in to any extent; it opened at fifty and closed at 483, seller sixty. After the board the market waa beavy. The following are Groesbeck & Huyt’s closing prices:—New York Central, 85j; Erie, 184; Harlem, 11f; Hudson, 29}; Reading, 493; Michigan Central, 644; Southern, 244; Panama, 109f; Illinois Central, offered at 75 without buyers; Galena, 88f ; Toledo, 38}; Rock Island, 78{; La Crosse, 4; Mlinois Central bonds, 873. A reaction from the sudden rise of the past two or three deys was to be expected, and this afternoon’s work does not by any means im- ply that the advance has been definitely checked. The business of the Sub-Treasury to-day was as follows:— —OF which irae customs... Pay mers —Ot which California drafts. Balanoe........ The exchanges ct the Bank Clearing Honse this morning were $15,173,562 97, and the balance $1,- 105,739 65. The Metropolitan certificates are with- out change, remaining at $6,000. The Marine Bank has declared a dividend of 3} percent, payable on the 9th of August. Byan ad- vertisement elsewhere, it will be seen that the cou- pons of the second mortgage ‘bonds of the Harlem (bonds of 1861 and Dover Extension) will be paid at the office of the company on the 2d of August. The interest coupons on the first mortgage bonds of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, due August 1, will be paid on that day at the office of the compa- ny in this clty, The scrip issued by the State of Minvesota, bearing 12 per cent interest, will be re- deemed by the State Treasurer, at his office in St. Paul, on and after August 10, at which time it will cease to draw interest.
