Wepvaspay, July 21—6 P. M. Dnlness continues to be not only the prevailing, bat the only featare of the market. In former years it was usual for the wealthy idlers at watering places to amuse themselves by speculating in stocks in this city; the orders for purchases and sales used to form a considerable part of the business of the telegraphs between this and Saratoga and the other fashionable summer resorts. This year the idlers seem | to be content with other forms of gambling. The merchants do not appear to have recovered from the shock of last March; though hardly any of them are making five per cent on their capital, and quite a nomber have large balances in bank lying idle, they abstain, for the present, from dabbling in stocks. The commission brokers might as well, for the business they have to do, be recreating them- selves in the country and laying in a stock of health and strength for the work they will have to do when a change takes place in the com- plexion of the market. As compared with prices current yesterday, New York Central was } lower this morning; Erie, {; Hudson, 3; Harlem, 3; Reading, }; Panama, }; Cleveland and Toledo, 3, &c. Galena and Rock Island were both steady and in good demand. Ilinois Central was a shade stronger, in consequence of the news from Europe, where, it is supposed, holders will soon get over their panic. Pacific Mail improved 4. Milwaukie and Mississippi was } better, the decline having brenght in buyers. La Crosse sold down to 5 per cent; the land grant bonds are steady at a shade below last quotations. There was very little done inthe bond market, Missouri, as usual, being the most active security, There appears to be a dispo- sition to sell them short, in anticipation of a fresh supply soon coming on the market. The board closed on a dull and stupid market. At the second board but little business was done, but there was no change in prices. The most active stocks were Rock Island and Milwaukie and Missis- sippi, which were actively dealt in at last quotations. The market closed dull, the latest quotations being: Missouris, 85{; Central, 85; Erie, 17{; Hudson, 2! Harlem, 114; Reading,45; Michigan Southern, 223; Panama, 105}; Galena, 89{ ; Toledo, 35]; Rock Island, 763; Pacitic Mat, 804. It is understood that an effort is being made to patch up the dispute between the Centra] and Erie. A meeting is to take place to-morrow at Cleveland, to discuss the question more thoroughly. The house in which the most influential director of the Erie isa partner continues to sel] Central short; and it is not, therefore, surprising that it would be announced that the Erie direction despairs of arriving at a satisfac- tory arrangement. The outgoing steamer Africa took out today $68,246 in specie—less than was expected. Ex- change rather fell off towards the close, and was offered (bankers’) at 109j.
