Brown, who hails from Schenectady, and who had been employed for some time at one of owr eollar factories. Whether it was the zomance of his @ceupation and life, or the qualities of his character, which captivated her, it is none of our business—suf- fico it, “she took to him kindly.” He seems to have been always welcome to her company, and they were often together—so frequently that although the Professor repeatedly declared the perfect honesty af his inteations, eS to the young lady began to be circulated in consequence of their familiarity. Professor calls “six weeks of courting” What Serminated yesterday, and the affair reached its cui- i Marion having previously “popped nd b cea accepted, the parties were holy bonds of matrimony” by Rev.C. P. Sheldon, of the Fifth stacet Baptist church, and @ certificate therecf, duly attested, “signed and sealed,” handed to the “happy bridegroom.” So far 8 appears, Marion was perfectly fair ia the transac- tion, told the girl not to take the step without due Deflection, ané Lefore the minister assured her that, ¥ she knew anything of his character or habits which should cause her to repent, she was at liberty to refuse a fulfilment of the contract. She did not @o #0, but walked into marriage with her eyes open. Bo far all was well. The tyr sg, was had at six o'clock, and about an hour after, Marion proceeded with his wife on board the steambont, intending to take passage for New York. As he says re | as seems to be at east partly true—be left ber on the boat and went eff to obtain his balloon and other baggage. While hhe was absent (this is his story) a women of West ‘Troy, who seems to have kaoown him too well, insti- = by jealousy and rage, went on board and filled ear of bis wife with stories against him, the con- sequence of hearing which was a determination on her part not to leave town with him. The lady from Vest Troy interfering, he rather sternly informed her that i wonld be the part of wisdom for her to shat up, which she did, He then got his wife on board the deoat, Re what with screaming and loud talking— being determined not to go with him—she soon drew @ crowd to the vicinity. The general supposition at Pnee seemed to be that Marion bad inveigied the wo- | fan to the boat, and having fonnd her unwilling to | accompany him further, was endeavoring to force | ber to do 40. Acting upon this supposition, the crowd suggested various ways of dixposing of the Profes- sor. Some favored hanging, others were for tarring and feathering, others thought ducking the most ex- peditions and appropriate means. It was finally de- eided to take Mrs. Marion to the Mansion House while be was detaiued on board the boat, and to have an invertiggtion gf the case. The Professor fght agatnet fate as well as be could, bat the woman was removed, and despite all hia efforts he could not get off the boat until it had teen fecided to let his wife have ber own course, aud to sustain her in it. This det-rmined, Macon rotated between the tele- graph office and the steamboat dock, amid an excited rabble of three or four hundred persons, who breathed all sorts of vengeance against him. Finally be made a speech to them, in which he assured them that they knew nothing of the care: fhat he bad been legally married by Rev. Mr. Shel don to the young we that he was “more sinned against than ¢innil that it foully cruel to ‘ernsh a man withent giving him an opport ~ 4 to ‘be heard, and that if they would be patient until to- day, all should be explained. This seemed to par. During the evening, Mrs. Marion was seen st the Man the Professor, Rev. Mr. Sbeldon, and rs, but she refused to return to her hasband remained over night witha Mrs. Tyrrel. The course of business during the past week ha been similar to that which we have recorded for many weeks past. The imports, as compared with those of the corresponding period last year, show an even greater decline than heretofore; which is owing chiefly to the fact that in July, 1857, the new tariff came into effect, and goods which had been held back to take the benefit of it were entered during thet month in large quantities. The trade in goods, groceries and other merchandise is reported as smal! and safe; the small dealers complain that they are do'ng nothing, while their wealthier rivals seem satieficd with a safe trade and reasonable pro fits. Children are given (o revenge themselves apon their play- fellows even at their own cost. But as adult men are not prone to so costly a method of gratifying their private pique, the public are driven to the con- clusion that in refusing to adhere to the fair and reasonable proposal of the Central, Baltimore and Obto, and Pennsylvania Central, the New York and Erie directors were infinenced by other motives than the gratification of private spleen, or asound concern Sutionived by nw aud wuichtbe part ie | for the welfare of the road; and as before, and thronghont this diseussion, the bnsiness partner of Mr. Drew, the most influential director of the Erie, has been conspicuous as a seller of Erie and Central, as his and Mr. Drew's opinions are daily quoted to the injary of these properties, the public as 8902 48 | may well inquire whether the Erte board may not, under this influence, bave refused to come into the arrangement proposed in order to lend aid to certain bear operations in stocks.
