Under the circumstances, it is most unfortunate for the company; those who operate for the rise in its stock may consider themselves lucky if a decline of ‘ene per cent is the only consequence. Milwaukie and Mis- sissippi slowly declines, in consequence of the fiman- cial troubles in which the management is involved. ‘The greatest rise of the day was in Pacific Mail, which went up three-and-a-half per cent on the strength of the probable profits of the company by the rush to Frazer river. People well remember ‘the enormous profits which were made by the first companies which carried passengers to California. Jt is confidently expected that the new line to Van- eouyer’s Island from San Francisco will prove equal- Jy remunerative. Within a fortnight Pacific Mail has risen ten per cent. Among the bonds the Mis- souris were the most active, at a rise of j per cent. Im the other State securities there was a moderate business done, without change in prices. La Crosse land grants rallied one per cent. It is understood that an interview has taken place between Gover- ner Randall, of Wisconsin, who is now in town, and the managers of this company, and that the Governor's objections to granting the certi. ficate, essential to the land grant, are in a fair way of being removed. The company is under- stood to have decided to pay its interest. There wasa sale of Nicaragua Transit at two per cent, Very little hope is entertained in the street that this concern will ever come to anything, though the monthly subvention paid by the Pacific Company to Commodore Vanderbilt would, if it were credited to it, make its stock valuable property. At the second board the market was somewhat weaker. New York Central, Erie, Reading, Rock Island, and one or two other of the speculatives, were shade lower. Pacific Mail was active at an ad- vance; Michigan Central likewise advanced a trifle. The closing prices were:—New York Central, 85; Erie, 18]; Hudson, 283; Reading, 46; Michigan Central, 58j; Michigan Southern, 23}; do., pre- ferred, 454; Panama, 1043; Minois Central, 76; Ga- Jena, 88}; Cleveland and Toledo, 36f; Rock Island, 76}; Pacific Mail, 75}, &c., Kec. ‘The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $16,548,749 17, and the balances #1,037,750 80. Several California bars have been taken up for the steamer of to-morrow, which it is supposed will take out $400,000 in specie. ‘As to domestic exchanges, Messrs. The totalssince the first of January last fall largely in arrear of those for the same period both in 1856 and 1857. The present week has given some more in dications of the scattering commencement of the fall trade. Merchants from distant points have appeared in market, and have made purchases to some extent to replenish their assortments, so that they may be prepared for the opening of the season in their respective localities. Buyers have appeared here and there from New Orleans, Mobile Louisville, Cincinnati and St. Lonis. But,as many swallows appear before summer, so many merchants arrive before the fall trade fully commences. The prospects regarding the fall trade continue to im- prove as the season advances; and with the con- clusion of a good harvest, and fair prices for produce, we may expect to see a considerable revival of trade generally. At last accounts from Europe the crops of grain on the Continent were said to be a promising, which bad imparted greater firmness to wheat and flour, both at London and Liverpoo!, which produced greater buoyancy in our market. Should the prices of breadstufts be by any chance enhanced the result will act very favorably on Western trade. Pork and beef are likely to be sustained at remunerative pri The discovery of extensive gold fields in Washington Territory has already caused pret of pork to be made for shipment to California. Some increase in the demand for ready made clothing and certain styles of dry goods may be expected to spring up for the same part of the country. At last accounts trade had revived at Manchester, and manufacta- rere were enabled to get better prices for goods, which fact, with the increased demand for money, showed that trade was reviving in England, which would lead to increased consumption of cotton goods, and tend to sustain the present prices of raw cotton. Our own manufacturers are prodnving more freely and with greater confidence. of them appeared in market this week, and pw cotton quite freely, While the raw material re mains within the neighborhood of present prices with the light stocks of goods in the country, no se rious decline in the prices of American cotton goods can reasonably be anticipated. Goods, therefore, are generally held with more firmness than they were at the close of the epring season. The move ment in domestic fabric as yet is light, while prices are firm. Brown a and shirtings were firmly held at 84e., six mu a _ eight months. Light sheetings were 5$c. a 6¢. In other descrip: tions there was no change of moment to notice. Bleached goods were selling moderately at steady prices, ere was an improved export demand for drills, and sales were reported for Calcutta at Sjc. Bleached and blue drills were quiet.
