The Dudley Observatory Quarrel, Axsayy, July 13, 1868. A meeting of those disapproving of the course o the majority of the trustees of the Dudley Observa- tory, was held here this evening. 1t was very large and entbusiastic. General Stephen Van Rensselaer presided, and B. P. Learned, Esq., was chosen Se- cretary. Professors Henry and Bache addressed the meet- ing, defending Professor Gould and the Scientific Council from the aspersions of the trustees, and were Porpmonpegg thy sone by the audience. At the close of Professor B.’s remarks, which occupied nearly two hours, Hon. D. D. Barnard brief; addressed the meeting, and stated that, disgracefu they aid'uot aduit of galtasy. The history given not admit 3 e ry given by " profeaneesElane and Bache was true—there could be no doubt of it in any one particular. Mr. Barnard then proceeded to speak of Professor Bache, and in most eloquent language al- juded to his services in the cause of science, and spoke of bim as a man who stands as an astronomer without a superior in the wide world. The motives of the trustees who ‘had deter- mined to dismiss Dr. Gonld are not known, neither will they be if the trustees can prevent it. He claimed that before Dr. Gould came to this city it was decided by the aforesaid majority that he should be removed, and after he came here they concluded to starve him out. He pronounced the statement prevented by Mr. Olcott, President of the Board, and published in the papers, to. be a most deli- berate attempt to strike down Dr. Gould and destroy his character and reputation. He bad never known such yer! to emanate from any man of respectability. It was disgraceful and disgusting, Could the trustees expect apycnenn man to come and take charge of the Observa' after the indignity and msult offered to Dr. Gould. No man would so dishonor himself. Mr. J. P. Pru» then moved the appointment of a committee of five to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting, and Messrs. J. B. Plumb, Orlando Meads, Dr. Thomas Hun, James Edwards — Benjamin Tibbitts were appointed such com- mittee. ‘The committee retired, and after a brief delibera- = reported the following, which were unanimously adopted:— Broatved, That we feol compelled from « sense of pub- lie duty, to deciare ip this pubse mauner tbat we entirely Oweprrove apd condemn ihe proceedings and action of the majority of the trustees of Lae Dudiey Onservatory, ip reation both to the Director, Dr. Gould, and to the Scientific Council.
