» Wood, for the Marder ef ale Beother’s Wile. ‘HIS PARTIAL CONFSSSION AND A+SgaTION OV INNO- CENOB ON THY GALLOWS. From the Roshester Union, July 10 } Ye yy at twenty-one minutes past taree 0 "clock +, Isaac L. Wood paid the penalty provided by Jaw for his crimes upon the gallows at Genesoe, Livingston county. As this was the first execution ever witnessed in the county of Livingston, and aa ‘an impression is too fast obtaining hereabouts that murderers should be liqnaed. rather than punished, we may be justified in laying before our readers something of a detailed report of the execution. The manner in which the trialand execution was conducted reflects credit upon the officers aud the pcre of our sister county, who have nobly aud mily vindicated the law of God and man, and in 80 doing have committed no act which need shock, the pensibilities of the most refined friend of law and order supported by justice, or any one else not so de) raved ato to sympathize with crime as well as punishment of Wood was not iu- Siena ina spit’ of revenge, and was attended with none of those riotous and disgraceful proceedings on which the paprnante of the deat penalty harp so much, Isaac L. Wood, who murdered his wife, bis brother, brother’s wife, and sought to murder two innocent children, was brought to the oe by the pevple of Livingston county orderly manner, and with great colemnity has paid the penalty of his crimes witb his life; and the scenes of yesterday no doubt made an impression for good upon all who witnessed them, and life is more secure in that section or the Bin, Thinking that the people of Monroe may rofit by the lesson of their et at the south, a ous ‘a report of the execution. trials and conviction of Wood we need not speak in detail, as all our readers are fawiliar with ‘what has transpired in the courts. Wood was con victed ot the murder of his brother's widow by_poi- son, at Dansville, nearly three years since. Prev- iously, his brother had died and sown wife, all un- AA ee, of poison. ny the time of the there was dot sufficient evidence to war- pores ‘an arrest, and nothing was done about the af- fair. Wood sought tosweep from existence a whole family, including two children of his brother, that he might their little property, of some of which be had possessed himself By & series of forge- ries. He nearly accomplished his purpose—the children alone survived—and tled tothe West, where he remained in seclusion for about two years, when— as murder will out—facts were obtained to war- rant his arrest, and he was brought back to answer. He was tried once, and the jury failed to agree ; but @ second trial resulted in his conviction. After the sentence was pronounced, to take effect on the 26th of June, an was made to obtain @ writ of error on the ground that the crime of for- gery was proven on the trial, bat Judge Joha- son was firm, and refused the application. Gover- nor King granted a respite of two weeks to Wood and that respite ended yesterday with his life. of the justice of the sentence, few if any doubted, al- though Wood persisted in his ianocence of crime from! first to last; but a partial confession betrayed him, and removed from the minds of ail at the Jast moment what doubts they may have enter- d. ‘Wood was a man thirty-six years of age, of small stature, weighing only one hundred and ten pounds. He had a common education, and while a resident of Dansville he was a member of the Metnodist church, and maintained ieee Pape rehip at the time he was destroying the lives of victims, At the time of his trial he exbibited symptoms of levity and inditfe- rence to religion, which led pb ae 4 ty suspect his guilt, and which destroyed all contidence in his sip- cirity as a professor of religion. In time of trial and great be esa age the true Christian finds a con- solation in faith, and does not then put aside its ela to resume it when all is sunshine and prosperity. When the Judge roth = jury, and they had retired to delil returned tothe jail with his brother, who Speke to spend a season in er. bd risoner declined, saying it was no Soneyt n. From that momeat his brother ‘wavere: his hopes of innocence, and now, we be- lieve, with all his ielatives, believes that Wood was @ guilty man. We mention this circumstance to show the character of Wood, and how mach his re- pretensions are worth’ as well as to explain the reason why no blood relations attended hia in his last moments. When Col. Wood, his counsel, communicated to the prisoner the fact that he ‘need entertain no further hope of escape from the dreadtul sentence, he seems to have set himself about the double pur- pose of putting on a show of Christian fortitude and making people believe that he was a persecuted and innoce ut man. He was advised by his counsel to call spiritual ad7isers, and he intimated his ee ness to do so. He asked Col. Wood to send him sue! a Ca as he thought would be suitable. Ac- cordingly Rev. Mr. Burchmore, rector of the Epis- copal church at Geneseo, attended him regularly at b. K and to the last moment of his life, ailurded tual consolation and advice as he could. ee ir. Bown, of Geneseo, and Rey. Mr. Mande- ville, of ey whose church the prisoner attend- that place, also called upon him fre- qeseily, om the ———— attended him to the gallows. —Mrs. Clark, of Lima— called apon Wood, and bade him farewell. She also left an order with the Sheriff to , deliver the body to an undertaker from Avon, who was to have it rly interred. The brother of the prisoner, be- ite an to, resides in New Jersey, and was at Daneville yesterday, but did not see the condemaed to bid him’s final adieu. Mr. Barnard, of Livonia, who married a niece of the prisoner, was present at the teoguations He, in common with the Tet of the or him as a guilty man. Thus de- pred by all his relatives, who had reason best to know his guilt, this wicked man weat to his final account. ‘On the evening before the execution, by request, District Attorney Hendee, Sheriff McCartny, J. Kershner, Hsq., and two deputies, visited the felon’s room in the 1. He talked of the crime for which he was condemned, and it was supposed that he was about to make a confession. It was then that he volunteered to say that he kuew that his wite, brother and brother's, wife were killed by poison, and that an attempt was made to kill the children, He also knew who the guilty party was, bat would not reveal the name. He said he was not the guilty one. On Thursday the was gine calm, and slept for more thar two soundiy and quietly, as the states, He spent most of the methine and the fhe rallows had tren erect. previa ‘The gallow: vious to the re- b pe ea ilding or rough ‘on the east side and adjoining 6 ot ne netics © was not suitable for an execution, being ot Pie, quite small in size, and built at an ear! ay The building erected was about 20 by 24 feet, sixteen feet hah. The fai is situated in a beautifal re behind Canaseragas, of Dansville, and Big rile lery, of Geneseo, doing x; ard duty. ‘Outside the line of sentries a multitude of six or eight hundred assembled to aview of the prisoner as he was led from the jail to the gallows. The Fa od were quiet, and no sound of revelry or rioting, boister- Ousness or mirth, was anywhere heard, before or after the execution. A more quiet and orderly as- semblage the writer of this never witnessed, in doors or out. Sheriff McCartny had summoned the usaal nam- ber of witnesses to the execution, and about cighty rsons were gathered in the josure about the gallows. Atseven minutes*to three the deputies and assistants of the Sheriff formed double line trom the door of the jail to the scaffold, and the prisoner came forth supy o As . a either side, attended by the ergy. The sol- emn procession moved in ‘a to foot of the gallows. Wood was dressed in a common suit, green frock coat, dark plaid pantaloons, check vest, ‘white shirt without collar or cravat, aad wore on hia head a black cap, made of cambric; and this Jatter article was the only thing he wore which might indicate that he was the condemned. Letter from the Wife of the Founder of the Berlin Free Love Lustitacten, We published not long since a statement regard- ing the rescue of a young wife, by her husband, fen the nest of free lovers at Berlin Heights, near Sandusky, Ohio. The developements made in the article alluded to have called forth the following communication from a heart-broken and saffering wife, who is the victim of this vile creed, or rather insane delusion. It tells a tale of anguish and sor- row which will arouse at once a feeling of pity for the sufferings of a wronged wife and mother, and of indignation at the vile tenets which inculcate sach } mao p and style them virtaous.
