OUB ALBANY CURBSSPONDKNUF. Aumany, July 3, 1858. the Flare up in the Dudley Observatory Difficulty Be tween the Trustees and Scientific Council —Drscharge of | shycid 06 enabled to epoak Dr. Gould—Certainty of Progress and Ultimate Ir umph, de. ‘The suspeasion of unity, harmony and concord between the principal director and @ majority of the trustees of the Albany Dudley Obrervatory is a matter of most nerious regret. It seems that Protessor Gould has be come so obnoxious to the Board of Trustees that they Dave deliberately resolved to dispense with his service: Neither the contributors to the institution nor the public were aware that any difficulty existed between the par- ties until afew cays since, when the fact appeared that the trustees adopted a resolution ddMlering that the con- stantly recurring difficulties in tho affsirs of the Obaerva- tory, arising {rom a want of barmony between Dr. Gould and the members of the Board of Trustees, bave satistled them that some new arrangement was absolutely ueces- sary—that is, the displacing of Dr. Gould, and the substitu. tion of some other person in his place. The trustees charge ‘that the “superlative precision and transcendital exactness in ordinary matters’’ of Dr. Gould has caused the usciess expenditure of very large amounts of money a»out the Observatory, for instruments and other matters, which have been entirely urcleas, and now prove to have been inexpedient. They charge delay, siso, in mounting the instruments which have becn constracted for use inthe Observatory. They ask, “Why do these noble instruments remain so long in the boxes when every astronomer, conscious of his own ability, would pant for the unfolding glories which they are expected to reveal” ‘They say they believe the reason why the ingtrunents have not been mounted is a discreet unwillingness on the part of Dr. Gould to test his skill as @ practical astrovo. mer. There are many other charges instituted against bim, made by men whose assertions will not be attempt- ed to be refuted, which go far to convince the public that tho professor possesses a spirit too arrogant and too ces- potic to have control of such a grand and noble national institution as the Dudley Astronomical Observatory is yet destined to become. It seems that the corporaters of the institution—that is, the trustees—placed in @ subordinate board, termed the Scientific Council, the regulation and management of the fostitution, as well as the sclection of practical scientific officers of the institution. The principals of the United States Coast Survey—Messrs. Bache, Henry and Pierce— were included. This Council was advised that the trus- tees bad removed Dr. Gould, and solicited the Council to co-operate in “some new arrangement in the affairs cf the Observatory.’ Messrs. Bache & Oo, write from Washington, requesting a copy of the spo- cific charges preferred against Dr. Gould, and the sugges tion of what new arrangements they, the trastees, pro- pose for future action. No such request was complied with, except communicating ® statement made by Mr. Ol- ‘struments, but he has exhibited to us a series they are ‘entirely barcless.
