He wag much respected by all who know ‘Free ty West Twenty mp Strrer—A Daring INcevp1a Ry ATTEMPT TO Destroy 4 DWELLING Hovse.—Between nive and ten o’clock yerterday morning a fire was discovered im an unoceupied bedroom on the third floor of the doard- ing houge No. 57 West Twenty third street, kept by Mra. Ladium. The police of the Eighteenth precinct and some citizens soon extinguished the flames by throwing the burning bedding into tho strect, and by the application of & few pails of water. In about five minutes afterward smoke was seen issuing from the recond floor, and officer Stooon discovered a bed on that floor also on fire, which be threw into tbe tree. On making search he {ound a pile of lace curtaine ona table in the backroom on tho second floor all ipa blaze. It appears that on the Zist October, 1955, the plaintiff, who resided at No. 23 Eighteenth street, Gows- nus, went out of an errand between nine and ten o'clock in the evening. Eucletan Society Anniversary. ‘The anniversary of the Eucleian Society of the Now York University was held last evening in the chapel of the University, where, in spite of the scorching heat, a large audience assembled. The exercises were opened with prayer and followed by music from an excellent brass band which was in attendance. Rev. H. &. Canresren, of Brooklyn, the orator of the evening, was then introduced, and proceeded to deliver bis address. The gene- ral feature of the market was dulness. It is evident that the public are not operating, and that the brokers have all the specniation among themselves.
