Or-vregat’l Meth, . The Reformed Dutch was the first form of worship in New York, brought ever by the desoeadants at those who founded the Dutch republic. When the colony of New Netherlands felt into possession of the English, the Protestant Episcopal church was established. The Reformed Datch were the first to establish Presbyterianism in America. Until 1764, however, their worship was conducted in the Dutch language. It appears by letter read ata recent meeting of the Historical Society, from Hon. H. C. Marpby, our minister at the Hague, that this form of worship has been established iu this country two hundred and thirty years. Mr. Murphy communi cated a translation from a letter from Jonas Micha: lius, the first Dutch Reformed minister in New York; another in the Dutch language, dated Maniutas, in New Netherland, August 11, This church now numbers in this country some 330 churches. The Reformed Presbyterian church claims lineage from the second reformation in Scotland, and binds its adherents to what is known as the National Co- venant of Scotland. ‘The Aasociute church dates from the expulsien of the Rev. Ebenezer Erskine by the General Assém- ia od ‘of the Church of Scotland i in 1733. The Associate Reformed charch was organized at Philade) gee October 31, 1782, by the union of the reformed and all the associate ministers ia the country. The German Reformed charch was organized in 1741. in Pennsylvania, and was subordinate to i Dutch church in Europe until 1792. In 1819, adopted an independent constitution, with a yaad und oresbyteries. Presbyterianiam made some progress in oarly years mm New England. At Londondery,in New Hempshire. where the Scotch-Irish planted a strong colony in the first half of the eighteenth century, there is still a presbytery, the only one we believe in the six New England States. Presbyterian churches were established early in Maine, but they have givea way tothe more vigorous younger brother, congre- gationaliam. ‘The mstinctive tenet of congregationalism is, as defined by the Boston Congregational Almanac, that “all church power resides in the church, and not in the church oificers ; and resides in each particular charch directly and originally, by virtue of the ex- press or implied contract of its members.” Congre- vauioualists deny that Christ has given to his minis- ters, or to togutebest and ruling elders, the exclusive either of ordination or judicial rate. They fore twenty churches iu this city and Brooklyi, with some two thousand five hundred communicants. ‘The usual number attending these twenty churches is about eleven thousand. In the United States they have some one thousand six hundred charches, Of the regular Presbyterians, as the sect is now defined, Mr. Francis Makemie was one of the first, if not the first minister in America. He came to New York in 1707. He was tried in this city “for preach ing without the Governor's license,” and ry in the common any hook.” The Court favored the prosecution, but the jury found “not guilty.” Not. Fithstanding his acquittal, he was made to pay the costa of prosecution, amounting to eighty three pounds, seven shillings and sixpence. are five va Baptista in this city, and in the number of their churches they are only ex- ceeded by the Methodists, the Presbyterians and th Episcopalians. Inthe United States they are ex ceeded in number by the Methodists, if the regular Baptists only are counted. Bat if all with whom baptism by immersion is a practice are reckoned, the Baptists will be found to be the most numerons charch in the country. Kentucky is the most Baptist State of the Union, not excepting the parent State Rhode Island. Methodism in all its sects in New York numbers ’ commuuicants. +, The Methodist church dates its formation from John Wesley, who lived to see hi+ labors in fine fruit. The sect bas gone on increasing in the United States, largely in the South and South. west. Of later years its increase has been slow in the Northern States. The Moravians are Episcopal in ordination, but resbyterian ia goverument.
