Interesting Jewtsh Ccremony—Consecration of a Bynagogue. At three o'clock yesterday afternoon a large and highly respectable congregation of our Jewish fellow citizens assembled at the building No. 78 Allen street, between Broome and Grand streets, which was to be consecrated to the Divine worship of the Most High, The place is named Beth Bamedresoh, or House of Learning, aud was hitherto a Methodist place of worship. The excellent choir of the Norfolk street synagogue was in attendance, and vory effectually assisted in the masical part of the ceremony. ‘The sor rices began with tho entrance of the miu'ster of the congregation, the Rev. J. Kantrowitz, followed by the trustees, each bearing a Sopher Torah, or scroll of the law, who approached the entrance of the door of the main ball. The usual knocks were then given to ask ad- mittance within the preciscts of the sanctuary, the Ha- zap saying :-— RAE B27 cteounen. © that I may come ‘The choir responded from withia:— ‘This is tho gate of the Lord—the righteous walk therein. mae ere ome redacted wie ae choir sapg in beautiful style a Hebrew salutation, be- ginning :— rao be the name of the Lerd from the house of the ‘The Hazan (or reader) and the whole choir thep sang:— How beautiful are thy tents, oh Jacob !—th; ciene "on taraell ad Ey de'thy ‘mecctfat kinghede, shalt enter tnto thy house, 1 bow do: boly ark and pa the Lord fro of his glory, and I will and the kaee. Immediately before the seven circuits commenced, the Rev. Abraham Rico, of Baltimore, ascended the pulpit in front of ine ark and delivered a very fervid discourse in the German largusgs on the strict observance of ‘Mosaic Jaws and the honor due tothe Sabbath. He dwelt on the impossibility of infringing the laws of Moses with- out cfiendirg God, because those laws are as immutable a8 God himself, It was false to think that ion could change with time, for time was reguiated by rel ) and not religion by time. In the last two thousand years of the Jowzeh vity, the nation was kept together because of tho laws Moses; anda he therefore urged his hear- ere to stavd fast by theee Ia Aiter the completion of the soventh circuit, the boarors of (he Sepher Turab approached the front of the ark, the President of the copgregaticn opeved it, while the choir and Razan sung the “ Shemang Isracl.”” Hear, ob Jaraelt—the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Tho Hazan then held up the Sepher and ascending the reading desk, eald a prayer for the governmeut, after which be eaid:— Praise ve the Lord, for his name alone is worthy of praise. ‘The chair responded :-— Praive ye him In heaven and earth, for he has chown his kincness to the chiidren of Israel. While this part of the ceremony proceeded, the Se- pherim were carried in proceesion and deposited in the ork. The Hezan then recited :— And when the «rk rested, then he said return, oh Lord! unto the thousands uf iby people. Arise, ob Lord! in thy resin place, thou aad thine ark with (bee. Thy p praise thee, and for the wake of thy servant David, return unto the piece of thy holiness. For 1 will do good to thee while thou keepest my law and dost not forsake ii, ‘The choir then joined the Hazan and sung:— Let usreturn to thee ob Lord! and let us come back again toour days of rest. The Rabbi preacher then ascended the pulpit and de- livered his inaugural addrese, after which “The Lord of the Universe’’ was sung by the Hazan and cho'r, and the services of the dedication was brought to a teruination. Personal Intelligence. It seems, after all, and in epite of his many former re- fusals, that Professor Agassiz, of Boston, will be won over for the directorsnip of the Museum of Natural Ristory of the Jardin des Plantes, at Paris.
