INTERESTING FROM UTAH. News from Solt Lake City by the Way of Sean Fraachco. OUR CALIFORNIA CORRESPONDENCE. San Feanctsoo, May 6, 1868, Interes'ing News from Utah—The Saints to Vacate the City and the Northern Portion of the Torritory—Going to Form Colonies on she Colorado, Mohave, and in the Val- leys of the Sierra Nevada—Brigham Gives Orders not to Fight, and Oails for Assistance to Leave the City = Scarcity ‘in Utah—The Women Wearing Ovats and Pants—Some- thing of Col. Kane, dc. On the 26th ult. we were startled by the unlooked for intelligence from the south of the evacuation of Salt Lake City. After all the terrible threats of the Prophet, and the worse things that were to be done by the “army of Zion” if the expedition ever attempted to move towards the Great Basin, we were little prepared for the news which has been brought in advance of the regular‘wall. We bave not received the Deseret News to stamp tho report with authority, but there are circumstances which throw an air ef consistengy about it which entitle it to consideration. ‘The news reached San Bernardino by the arrival there of a few Mormons on the 20th. They bring advices from Great Salt Lake City up to the 24th of March—fourteen Gaye later than that received by the last mail from that place. The chief of this party is well known in San Ber- nardino; and though his statement of the change in Mormon politics was unlosked for, he is, novertheless, fully be- lieved by those acquainted with him. He says that as hia party reached Codar City, @ distance of fully 250 miles from Sa't Lake City,on the 20h of March, they were over aken by a courier from Brigham Young, who brought @ printed circular from the ‘First Presidency,” also ape- cial despatches to the authorities in the different settle- ments, announcing that the United States troops weal be permitted to enter the Valley without molestation. It was the intention of the Saints to vacate the city and all the land north of Uteh county and go south. The Mormons in the southern settlements of the Territory will not be re- quired to vacate their lands; but those who leave the north will form colonies upon the Colorada, the Mohave ‘and in the valleys of the Sierra Nevada, All thoughts of war are, therefore, abandoned, and the repeated assertion that their bouses and property weuld be commitsed to the flames falls to the ground before the assurance that whatever losses they sustain in conse- quence of the occupation of the city by the troops will be met by the goversment. Brigham, in the circular re- ferred to, commands his followers not to fight, nor t> op- peee in sry manner the army of General Johnston. It is believed that this charge bas been accomp'ished entirely ‘hrovgb the influence of Colonel Kane, of whom I wrote to you in previcus letters. The Colcnel arrived at Salt Lake City on the 25th of February, and on the 10th of March he left for Camp Scott. He had returned to the city or sent to it the result of bis negotiations, which led to the despa‘ch of the cour- jer with the pews w woe received. It is further stated that in the circalar Brigham bed made a cal! for five hun- dred teema to aid the removal from Salt Lake City. Io the absence of something official, it is difficult to ar- rive at any concivsion on this important change with apy degree of confidence. There is, as it stands. decided evidence of back down on the purt of the Mormons, for the party alluded to etates thatthe eol- diers were to erect in Salt Lake Valiey a military fort, which is noe was never to be permitted: out the statement, as they have it, that the adsence of the rom their homes is but temporary—toat after a gon py pba aahad ov nl on Ww the Pacific, wil yewrn as before—would seem to justify the corciueion that a compromise measure has ‘deen held out by Colovel Kane to Grigham Young, and mei wub some Fut ip the camp.
