Truly, &>. THOMAS N CARR. #MNANCIAL AND COMMEKCIAL. BOuEYWY MARKET. Moynay, May 24—6 P. M. ‘There waa quite a panic among holders of railroad securities this morning, and a decline ranging in seme imstances as high as two per cent was realized. There ‘was po! a very large business at the current rates; and although operators appeared to be a go>4 deal frightened for ihe moment, their fears were not deep rooted enough to induce extensive sacrifices. At the firet board Missouri Mate 6's fell off K per cont; Tennessee 6's, 4; Hudson River Railroad third mortgage bon¢s, 1; La Crosse land grant bonds, %; New York Central Railroad, 1}; Erie, 1}; Hudeon River Railroad, 2; Reading, 2; Michigan Cen trai Railroad, }¢; Michigan Southern, old, 1%; do., pre- ferred, 1%; Panama, 2; [linois Central Railroad,1; Ga- Jeva and Chicago, 1%; Chiesgo and Rock Island, 2. It will be reen that the decline was universal. Everything fom the list sold at lower prices. The principal business ‘was confined to railroad stocks. State securities and rail- ead bonds were not freely offered, and im the sales made mo very great change appears. Tais violent movement in ‘the stock market will do a great deal of good. It will give life and activity to speculation and bring in new @iasses of operators. Any change was better than the dull, stupid, heavy market we have reported fer 50 macy weeks, ani we now have one that will tempt new buyers, and give even the old bear party | chance to come in for an up- ‘ward action. We may look for more spirited opera. ions, and it is not at all impossible Dut that an inflation wil follow the present important fuctuations equal to ‘What realized in the early part of the spring. The princi- pal causes of this rapid depreciation in market values are eimost entirely looal. Political affairs have very little to do with it. The market for some weeks past bas been so ‘wniform and steady, and the movement has become so moggiod that it became daily more evident that an active ‘peculation could be promoted only by letting prices Gown s0 as to aliract & new set of outside operators, At prices ruling up to about the close of last week it was ‘considered that suflic.ent margin did not exist for a rise, to induce the investment of new capital. Sach ® margin was derirable, and such a margin has been obtained by the decline of the past few days. At the second baprd ‘the market was inactive, and as « general thing lower in Prices. La Crome and grant bonds fell off 4 per cent; Erie, \(. Micbogan Contre! Railroad, §¢. Michigan South- @rv, 0l4, advanced & per cont. After the board, the mar.
