Fup, May 7—6 P.M, ‘The amount of busines transacted at the board to-day ‘was quite limited, and the general complaint was of dul- ness, All the regular speculators of the sirect appear to be operating in their individual capacity. There are no cliques, no combinations, and very few large holders of stocks. Any movement mede for an a@vance or decline is with a view of realizing @ very smal! profit, and one and two per cent appear to be satisfactory to the winning party, It is, in fact, a ome and two per cent market. The rise or fail hardly goes beyond that point. Outsiders de not operate much in this way. They cannot tarm quick enough, and profer purchases; for cash, 90 that the stock can be taken out of the market. At the first board to-day Ta Crosse Land Grant bonds advanced 3 per cent; Eric Railroad, 4; Michigan Southern, old, 3; Pamama, ; Cleveland, Columbus an4 Cincinnati Railroad, 34; Milwau- hie and Missiasigpi Railroad, 3. The quotations current this morning do not differ much from those ruling at the close yesterday. Tne comaicsian houses have very fow orders, gud the outide absorption of stock appears to bave ceased for the moment. Mere are large holders of stock outside of the street who are waiting for au ad- vance to cithor realize or add vw thotr present line. Tne abundance of money is steadily operating to reduce the ‘amount of stock in speculators hands, and this fact alone has a powerful influence upon prices. Daring & com- paratively iimited supply of money, outside speculators purchase on time, usually buyer’s option, and are con tent not only to pay interest on their contracts, but to setile merely the differences at the maturity. Now out- side purchasers buy @ good deal for cash, and when they parchase om timo stand ready to take in the stock when it falls due and put it away in their pockets. There is, therefore, a wide difference in the character of the movements at different times. The first may do well enough during a period of wild excitement and active speculation, but the last is more effective in a long run. There isalarge number of shrewd capitalists im the market who understand very well the position of our prominent lives of railroads, who know very well that most of them are unwarrantably depreesei, that they are gradually extricating themselves from the difficalties and disasters of the revulsion, that they are suffering more or lees from the unprecedented stagnation of basi ness, and that they are now passing through the worst phases of the times. Koowing thie, they are picking up Jots of stock daily, without the slightest reference wo any speculative operations of Wall street, and the probability is Cat io lees than twelve months they will realize the result of their foresight and sagacity. At the second board the market was steady, with a moderate amount of business. Chicago and Rock Island advanced \{ per cent; Pacific Stea@umhip Company was 3¢ per cent lower. After the board the current rates at the clone ruled ouwide. The disagreeable weather undouht edly hat a depressing influence upon operations. A few days of sunshine might give more life to the market and bring about some epeculative excitement. ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows:— Total receipts..... $125,953 97 ~~ ments. ‘231,733 62 seseeees 2,018,086 92 We receipts to day include $40,000 from customs. ‘The transactions of the Clearing House to day were as follows:— Total exchanges .
