A resciztion haying this object in view was introduced in the Legislature, but the strength of the lobby prevented an investigation. This was abcut the time when the Common Council of the city had under consideration the project of demolishing the old ricketty Washington market, andeither replacing it witha new ‘one or remove the market to some up town location, The public were then informed that the city had no valid title to those grounds, ror had Mr. Morton or any one else any authority to collect rents from or geil privileges to squat- ters or hucketers. Itwas eaid that the lobby could uct forever prevent the tavestigation of the title, and that the actlorities of the Btate would sooner or later undertake to exercise jurisdiction over it. That time La pe el rived. Neither the of Goceraneney ent ies oF persons, other -than the of w York, can a ipeecahapnaee lands. Now, the action cf the Tand Office, in leasing the property to James W. WW. Taylor and Owen W. Brenpan for one year, atthe rent of five thousand dollars, will bring the ‘matior to a test. The property is row valued at “gin Q million of dollars. Az thus situated, being inthe ¥ heart cf business, and evidently of immense luctiyeness, it is cer- tain that the Commissioners of the Land Oilice would not be justifiable in granting title to these ‘lands under water,’ unless authorized to do so by an act of the Legisiature. There can be no doust but guch authority will be readily granted, and the Corporation be placed in full title and ‘possession of those valuable premises. Then by outting it up into lots, together with the grounds now occupied by Washing- ton market, and of them for mercantile pur- poses, the city would realis leaving @ suficient sum out and convenient market in some up town locality. be of uo use for the Common Council of New York to enter into a cortroversey with the State as to that title. Better remain quiet, employ no lawyers or counsellors, but sud! the matter to the next Legislature, and the title will undeubtediy be obtained, without costing the city a exngie dollar ov er the usual fee for making out the papers at Aloany. Our new Common Council held its first meoting | evening. Their names were offered to the board for com- firmation, when one of the democrats, Alderman Kearney of the Seventh ward, bolted and voted against bis party friends, thus preventing the election Today there has been “terrible swearing in Flanders,” and the excitement has runto a high pitch. Alderman Kearney holds the key to office in his own pocket. Being a man of energy and cetermination, !t is said he is about paying o‘! some old scores contracted upon the county treasury question in November last. We have had a atrife for the lasttwo years between two rival Mayors, neither fully recognized as such, and now the democratic party, in consequence of its dissensions in the first ward, is completely paralyze, and probably prevented from enjoying the full fruits’ of victory for another year. The recert circular issued by the Metropolitan Bank, of- fering to assort and arrange and redeem country paper for the emall amount cf one eighth of one per cent, hag greatly alarmed the cew Albany Assosting House. They have eonsulted a few of their country cousins, some of ‘hom bave agreed to stand firm at a quarter per cent, notwithstanding the more liberal New York offer. They allege that as soon a: the Metropolitan obtains sufficient power it will undertake to break down and shut up the Albany concern, and then raise their prices, dictate as for- merly to the country bunks, an! play the deuse generally with them.
