La Crosse and Milwaukie land grant Donds sold to some extent and closed frm at our qootations. All the funded securities of the Michigan Southern Railroad Company bave improved since the elec- tion of the new board of directors. There appears to be mere cenfidence in them since the road has got into new hands. Both classes of stock and ai] classes of the bonds have advanced in market value. At the second board the market was quite buoyant. Nearly everything on the list @pened and closed at better prices. With this there was qmite an active business. At the close a disposition to take hold of some of the leading stocks in a speculative way was visible, and a ‘wery moderate movement of this character would give a wery great upward impetus to prices. ‘The Azsistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows: — Since Jan. 1. Pay- ments from Western merchants come in slowly, but are expected to improve as the season advances. Merchants from the principal trading centres of the West do not buy largely at apy one period; but they have been purchasing ina moderate way ali the time. When these customers become stronger in financial means they will, no doubt, lay in stocks abead. The business among several con- siderabie jobbing houses is eubjected to some inconve- nienge and confusion By removals to other stores on first of May. The constant tendency of the dry goods trade is to move higher up town. Stores below Trinity church are in many cases vacated for those in cross streets, west of Broadway, higher up. The auction houses follow the migration of the jodbers, and have chiefly removed to stores on the west side of Broadway, and some of them have this spring taken mores further ap town. These removals have largely changed the value of real estate. It bas largely advanced in the district referred to west of Broadway, and depreciated jeast un that street. Formerly Pear] street, and especially that part of it front ing Hanover rquare, with William, Beaver, Exchange place, Pine and Cedar streets, were the chief emporium of the dry goods trade in years gone by.
