A large iron aafe in the frout office of the butlding first attracted the attention of the thieves. They were anxious to examine its interior, bat all their effortsto pick the lock proved unavailing. They determined at last to resort to the hazerdous expedient i biowing it up with gunpowder, and accordingly due preparations wére mado to remove the stumbling block which stood between them and the treasure. The safe was first turned upon its back with its face towards the oeiling, and then the work of drilling commenced. MONEY MARKET, Terspar, April 20—6 P.M. ‘The advance at the first board this morning is another indication of the steady upward movement which began ton days ago, and which, strange to say, has progressed without the aid of « single member of the board. It isthe work solely of the outside public, who have been buying stocks while the brokers bave been selling them short. Had apy beld operator, with adequate means, laid hold of the market within the past ten days, he would have bad no difficulty in putting the leading epeculalives ten per cont higher; nothing of tho kind, however, has been attompt- ed, and the market has been left to the mercies of the public and the bears. The result we can see in a compari. son between the prices current now and those which ruled in the first week im April, showing an advance in a fort- night of from 5 to § per cent. The chances are now strongly tn favor of a decided further upward movement. Th would be accelerated and intensified f any pro- minest ball were to enter the market today as 4 genorsl purchaser; but even without this, it can hardly fall to take place. Slowly and by degrees the public ere purchasing stocke—some for cash— and these are removed out of the market; the othors on time, and these the bears—who are brokers—are now des- porately embarrassed to deliver. Erie, for instance, which bas been immensely oversold, chiefly by directors of the company, is scarcer than it has ever been; if any one chose to take the pains, it mignt be put to 90 without dif foulty. New York Centra mm the same manner has bean largely sold short, in anticipation of the re Imposition of tolla by the Legislature. The best informed persons who are acquainted with the aifeire of thie company are offering bets that it will touch par before next dividend day. Hadson River is in the same condition, Though it small, snug stock, of which stroot has never held any quantity t speak of, the bears have actunily sold short between fifteen and twenty thousand shares, which they will probably have to buy for delrvery in the neigh borhood of furty. Persona whe have money lying idle riek very litte by s venture in one of these live ffn- cles, provided they keep the option in their own bands and secure a fool contract.
