FIN/.NCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Frupay, April 06 P. M. “ ‘Mme second great upward movement in stocks for the year 1868 now seems to be under fall headway. The Qrst movement, which succeeded a long period of dal- wees and inaction, a vast majority of he board being Dears, and the bulls confined to a small but wealthy and sagacious clique, may be said to have begun in the middle ‘of January, and to have gradually progressed, gaining strength by constant accessions from the outside world, ‘aad by conversions of inside oper tors, until, after real- izing a rige in most of the speculative stocks varying from fiteen to twenty per cent, it reached ite climax in the first week in March, when the clique unloaded, and the market necessarily gave way underthe burthen. A num- ber of operators availed themselves of this occasion to put wet short contracts and hammer the market. There ‘Delng ro resistance, they succeeded in compelling a de- elise of price varying, im the speculatives, from 18 to 10 per cent. Here, had they been sagacious, it would seem they should have stopped and waited for the reac- eo. With ihe proverbial recklessness of bears, thoy did wet do this, but, on the contrary, proceeded to put out con- tracts a! the lowest Ggures as readily as they bad at ten percent ebove, Meanwhile the old bull clique was quiet- jy coming in, pot as buyers of cash stock, butas pur cbasers of large amounts on buyer's options. They mate no effort to lift the market. On the contrary, having made their contracts on their own terms, they qprety ‘awaited the result which, in a community Mike ours, could not but follow a period of depression fm otocks, dulvess of trade and plethora of money. Events are now fulfilling their just anticipations. Ever since iast Monday the market has steadily improved under pur- chases made wifermly by the well known commitsion brokers. Yesterday and to-day the rise was quite marked, amounting to from two to four per cent in the leading apeculatives; aud we believe that, without exception, ‘me four classes whi ‘timulated this rise were made by pradent shorts who are trying te save themselves, and by ‘the commission brokers for the outside public. Nota hundred sbares of cash stock can be traced as having Deen purchazzed by the bull operators. The indications of the market are so precisely similar to those which were vemarked in January last that the result which followod ‘hom then cannot long be delayed now. It looks as though we were again on the eve of a great stock inflation, and ‘Mhere is co saying to what points our excitable public may net carry etocks, or how long they may not be kept there. It is, however, to be hoped that the Legislature may pass fhe bill legalizing time operations before the contest is ever; so that, when the day of settlement comer, the sso t and eary method which got some of the bears out of their fwoubles last February may not be as generally used in ‘April or Mayas there now seems reason to apprehend may be the care. Ab the first board Ta Crosse land grant bonds advanced 34 per cent; Pacitic Steamship Company, 34; New York Gentral Railroad, 3; Cumberland, 34; Hudson River Rail- oad, °<; Reading,2; Micbigap Central,1; Galena and Chi- ago, 1; Michigan Southern preferred, %; Panama, 21 Greveisnd and Toledo, 2; Chicago and Rock Island, 1; Mil- waukle and Mississippi, 3. The demand was particularly ‘aotive for New York Central, Erie, Cleveland and Toledo, and Chicago and Rock Island. At the second board the market was particularly buoyant, and closed strong at a further improvement in prices. La Crosse and Milwaukio and grant bonds advanced 34 per cent; California State T's, 14; Virginia 6's, 3; Galena and Chicago second mort- gage bonds, %; Erie bends, 1871, 34; Pacific Steamship Oompany, 4; Delaware and Hodson, %{; Erie, 3; Michi- gan Southern, old, %; Galena and Chicago, 1; Chicago and Rock Island,1. Illinois Contra) Railroad de@lined % per cent; Dlinois Central bonds, *;. The improvement in Pansma this mornirg is attributed to the fact that the Pacitic Steamab!p Company have it under consideration to establieb a line of propellers on the line between Panama ‘and San Francisco, to afford greater facilities for freight- {mg business. At the close there was a decided upward tencency and an active demand existed for all the leading epeculgtive securities. ‘The transactions at the Clearing House to day were as $15,073,353 15 T4411 OL The Metropolitan currency certificates now amount to 8312,000. ‘The Volcano Quertz Mining Company, of Placer county, Californ’a, referred to yesterday, is & stock company Drovght out by certain individuals for the purpose of at twacting subscriptions. We know nothing about its merits or the experience or objects of ita managers, but would apgeet to all who may contemplate such investments the policy of looking closely and carefully into them. There & nothing so deceptive as mining projects, and too much caution cannot be exercised in their investigation ‘The annexed is a comparative statement of the imports ef foreign dry goods at New York for the week and sinoe | Jaxvary 1 — Bor the Week. 1856. ‘1867. 1858.
