Yesterday forenoon the British steam sloopof-war Styx, Captain Vesey, of six guns andtwo hundred and ‘eighty horse power, came into this harbor from Matan- zas. Following in her wake was a schooned called the Panchita, which had been captured as a slaver by ths Styx. She also reported having recently captured, at sea, a large ship, without colers, but which was fully fitted ous for the slave trade, aud which had three thou. Band onzas and upwards ou board. Police Commissioner Bowen has said that he had “ rosson to believe’ that Allsop was bere. A Wall street journal recently etated that it was “enabled to state positively that he was bere.” Officer King, of the detective force, says he has seen him, and recognized him from the description, and the fact seems to be pretty generally conceded. It is a Police Commissioner's businoss to know ‘of the presence of partios suspected of crime; it is not at all surprising, as Allsop was a broker, that a Wall street journal should know of his whereabouta; and the descrip- tion of him was £0 perfect, that the officer could hardly have boon mistaken. Ho is doscribed to be aboat sixty years of age, full six feet high, with fair complexion, light gray eyes and hair, strongly built, with @ stoop, as if round shouldered. With these poculiarities, is i3 fair to presume that when once seen, ht would be recognized. As to his preseat whereabouts, there appears to be as much mystery aa thore was about his presence in the country. One journal says it has reason to believe he is in Brookiyn; Polio: Commissiouer Bowen says he don’t know; tbe Britis and French Conaule say that he might walk the streets wishout dread of thoir intertereuca; aud Deputy Superintendent: of Police Daniel Carpenter says that “ be knows whether be is in New York or not, he has got him safo where he can’t be a; aud be wit teil the new for $100." Reading opened and closed weak this morning. ‘Tho road ta doing a vory small business, and the compasy will have to reduce ita tolls very largely to got oven an ordinary amount of business. At present nearly the on- tre trade of the Schuylkill coal region takes the canal. if the present rates on the canal and railroad are maintained, it ia estimated that the canal will do the bulk of the busi- ness for this year, The coal carrying companies conter- ing at this port, or rather upon the waters of New York bay, have put their rates for freight very low, and the advantages of thia port for shipping coal will compel the Philadelphia companies to hold out greater inducomenta to the mining companica to secure even a portion of the trate, This will result at no very distant day in the ruin of all the transportation concerns. Hudson River Railroad etock waa in vory active demand this morning. It opened at 28 and left of at 255% percent cash. After the board it sold at 30 por cent. The shorts in this stock are likely to have a nico ‘time of it in making their deliveries. The company is in a very prosperous condition, and wili show some very tat- tering resulta trom this year’s business. This road bas never been subjected any sharp fnancicring, and bever added a doliar to tts capital or debt by the payment of unearned dividends, The entire capital stock is only thirty-seven thousand shares, and but email portion ia on the market, Canton Company was very firm this morning. There ts very little stock on the mar ket. Cleveland and Toledo closed pretty stemty this morning at 45 a 45), per cemt The company have formally apnounced the passing ot the April divkiend. It will bes long time before this road esrns a dividend or resumes payment, The funded and floating debta are running up very fast, aod will continue to adsorb the on tre not earnings. Chicago and Rook Island has been vory quiet for some days. The company have not formally announced the passing of the April dividend, but we pre sume that a fow days will determine the matter. Tho 10th of April is tho regular dividend day. There was e emall eale of Sixth Avenue Ratiroad stock this morning at 108 per Cent, whieh is an ai vance. ‘At the second board a better feeling prevailed and bet tor prices were realized. For Roading, 48% bid and 4 asked, There is a strong upward movement in Sludson River, and operators for arise feel confident of carrying it up to higher points tan have yet been touched. There ig everything in the condition of the company to justify such a course. The quotations for New York Central in London show an advance of three per cent. Such an improvement ia calculated to increase orors in this mar kot for foreign account, and to enlarge the limit for those previously sent.
