The dry goods trade within the past two or three days has, however, exhibited greater animation, though taken as a whole it is considera- bly under the amount when compared with the spring business at the same period last year. Theve was more animation at the auction rooms. ‘The at- tendance has been generally favorable. Among the sales was one held by Messrs. Van Wyck, Townsend & Warrans, of French silks. The catalogue” was large and attractive, and contained many packages of desirable styles. The black silks brought fair and pepreiener yy wc The fancy silks sold well, and sustained current rates ut private sales. The sale, upon the whole, was considered as one amon; the beet of the season. Other sales were hel which were fairly attended, and favorable prices obtained, except incatalogue sales of embroideries and tailoring goods, which brought irregular prices. Some sales of older styles of goods were made at tower rates. The export of cotton me eer goods from New York the past week were light, while trom Boston there was more doing. The exports embraced about 1,000 packages, of the value of about $64,000. The total value since the Lst of Janu- ary last amounted to $107,893. ‘The chief shipments last week were made to Calcutta and to Rio Janei- ro. Tne total shipments from New York last week were only of the value of $3,703. The whole ship. iments from this port have amounted to £,040 pac ages, against 7, 108 forthe same time last year. The advices by the Canada trom Eng!and represented an improved demand for cotton goods in Mauchester, with firmer prices The trade in domestic cotton goods has also continued firm the present week, with an improving _ ten- dency in prices, and especially for heavy fabries of ey and bleached goods. This im- provement has also been manifested in the Boston market. Brown sheetings, in this market, were firmly hela at Tle. a 8e., at foar and six months, with the usual discount at the inside term. Light sheetings were selling at about 7c. Bleached goods were in fair demand and prico + tanstained. It is thought, however, with the movements of trade later in the spring, and with continued ese in mow ey that the importations will be large during the balance of the year, especially during the early summer, for the fall trade. Though the trade, in a general way, fails to display the apuimation that it did this time last year, it is seeulated by sounder views, while confidence, which i wapaired byt the panic last fall, is grada- ally returning.
