We see no signs of weakness in the stock market, but on the contrary every indication of permanent and increasing strength. The transactions this morning were large, and prices were wonderfully sustained after the rapid advance of yesterday. At the first board to-day Californi@ State 7's ad- vanced 2 per cent; New York Central 7’s,{; Har- jem second mortgage bonds, }; Cary Improvement Company. 4; Harlem preferred, 4; Chicago and Rock Island, 13. Hudson River Railroad third mortgage bonds declined 1 per cent; Milwaukie and Mississippi second mortgage bonds, 3; Pacific Steamship Com- pany, 1; Reading Railroad, ; Michigan Central, 4; Michigan Southern preferred, 1; Panama, $; Illinois Central, 4; Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, 1; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 1; Galena and Chicago, }; Ge veland and Toledo, 3. New York Central opened | "5 £94 per cent, but left off at 934, the closing price gles At the second board the sales were only tw a moderate extent. The stocks offered were principally from street operators. Outsiders ap- pear to have no stock for sale, and all the efforts of the brokers cannot fetch it out. A decline is only an incentive to take hold stronger. This afternoon New York Central 7's advanced 1 per cent; Cumberland, j; Cleveland and Pittsburg, by Cleveland and Toledo, j. New York Central Railroad fell off 4 per cent; Erie, 1; Hudson River Railroad, ]; Michigan Southern Railroad, j; Galena and Chicago, 3; Illinois Central, 4. After the board the market rapidly recovered and closed very firm. Hudson River was in demand at 35% a 36 per cent, Erie at 34f a 34], Chicago and Rock Island at 86 a 864. It appears impossible to keep the market at all depressed. Holders of first class stocks will not sell them, because they do not know how to other. wise employ the money, and new bayers are coming in every day because they have no other way of using their surplus means.” No matter how much prices advance, this difficulty is likely to continue. | Mouey isa complete drag in the market, and secu- | rities which promise to pay six, eight and ten per cent per annum, must at no distant day range far ahead of present quotations. The value of money in Great Britain is merely nominal. The Bank of England's official rate is 3 per cent, but outside the highest point is 24 per cent, and on the Stock Exchange as low as land 1% percent. The rates in this market range from 4 to 6 per cent, and any amount of money can be raised at the shortest notice. We see no posi- bility of any change in this «tate of things for some months to come. The supply of capital seeking investment is more likely to increase than diminish, and securities paying even the ordinary rates of in- terest will be sought for at improving prices. The steamer now nearly due at this port from Liverpool will, without doubt, bring some response to this ex- pansion in our stock market. out very favorable advices from this side and large remittances on account of dividends. The few de- faults reported, after such a sweeping financial revalsion, must be satisfactory to holders abroad and we think we can look with confidence for large orders for further investment. Several of our most prominent railroad stocks are largely held in land, and unlimited orders will in all probability come ont as soon as our market has been properly can\assed. The gross earnings of the Uhicag» and Rock Isiand Railroad Company for February are re ported as being about twenty thousand dollars in advance of thove for the same month last year, and the receipts of the Hudson River Railroad Company in February this year will foot up full double those for the corresponding period in 1857. While the Hudson line will show a great incr@ase in gross in come, it will also show a very great reduction in the operating expenses. The saving in expeuses on the Hudson River Railroad this year is estimated to be equal to a seven per cent dividend, to say nothing ut increased receipts. All the indications point to a very heavy traffic on all our Western roads. The extenstum of lines west of the Mississippi river will add largely to the through business of the trunk lines this side, particularly the Chicago and Rock Island and the Galena and Chicago. These roads are prepared with extraordinary facilities in the way of rolling stock for travel ani traffic, and the proba- ty is that Lefore the close of another harvest the whole power of each will be called into requisition. The Assistant Treasurer reporte to-day as fol lows: — mal receipta.. } =| payments. “the receipts today include $59, 000 from customs. The transactions at the Clearing House to-day were as follows: Total exchanger 6 Tota! balances: 40,364 76 The Metropolitan Bank certific ates are saosin w $1,287,000, being a decrease of $84,000 since yester sy. The lowa State seven per cent loan of $200,000 was awarded to Cook & Sargent, of De pot lowa, atpar. The State debtis limited by the con stitution to $250,000. The Bark of Eagland retarna for the week ending Febenary 10 show an increase in bullion of £780,9 and in unemployed notes of £1,247,345.
