After his last return from Russia his health failed, and he gave up his engagements here and else where, that he might enjoy repose and breathe his native air. For many months his condition was so precarious that reports of his death more than once became current; Dut more recently he rallied greatly, sanguine hopes of his recovery were entertained by bis family, aad much benefit was expected Dott by bimself and them from a Visit to Torre del Greco, which was contemplatea in April ‘ext. But these hopes have proved faliacious. About a mcnih ago he had a viglent attack of his malady, under which be sank, after suffering excruciating ageny with great fortitude and calmness. fo his iast illness he was Qflectionately tended by his daughter, Madame Thai- berg. He bad !ost his excellent wife abcuta yearand a balf ago. He was ip his sixty second year, having been born at Naples ip 1796. He was of French extraction jas bis name imporis), but was himself a thorough eapolitan. His career, unchequered by remarkabie events, was, from an early age, a course of uninterrupted success. After baving risen to the highest eminence in Italy, he came to England for the first time in 1880, and made bis debut at the Italian Opera (then the King’s thea. tre), in the character of Geronimo in Cimarosa’s comic ‘opera, ‘Ii Matrimonio Segreto.’’ From that night his po- gition on the Italian stage was at once established as one of the richest and most legitimate comedians, and the most magnificent Dass singer of the age. From successive ap- pearances it was discovered that his gevius was as verva- lle as it was great, ranging from the lightest comedy, and even farce, to the mort lofty tragedy—from Geronimo, ‘and Bartbolo, and Don Pasquale, to the majestic Oroveso end the terrible Duke of Ferrara But itis neodless to enter vpon the transcendart merits of Lablache—they are familiar to every musical reader. Like great artists in general, Lablache was essed of much intelligence and genera) attainments. His character was manly, generous ‘and straightiorward: his mannere were genial and plea sant; and he was not less respected and beloved as a man than'be wae admired as an artist. His lose is irreparable. Ap extended biograpbical sketch of M. Lablache was pub hehed in the Beka only a short time since. There were very 1 ns in ali the leading speculative stocks, ax advance in most of them was realized. The aggre- | gate amount of transactions sums up greater that | any day yet reported during the present speculative movement. At the first board Missouri State 6's advanced ¢ per cent; California 7's, 4; New York Central 6's, 4; Canton Company, $; Hudson River Railroad, 1}; Harlem, j; Reading, 1; Michigan Cen. tral Railroad, 24; Michigan Southern, preferred, 1); Galena and Chicago, 14; Cleveland and Toledo, Chicago and Rock Island, 1; Milwankie and Missis- sippi Railroad, 5. Virginia State 6's declined 4 per cent; Illinois Central bonds, 4; La Crosse land grant bonds, 4; New York Central Railroad, 4; Erie, }; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 1; Mlinois Central Rail- road, j. The most active fancy on the market this | morning was Reading Railroad. While most of the | other railroad stocks have been steadily advancing, | this bas moved very little. It bas at last been | taken in hand, and it looks as though | the parties concerned intended to make up for lost time. Cleveland and Toledo was quite active at the first board, and the sales amount to more than three thousand shares, almost entirely for cash. It was well sustained throughout. Galena and Chicago was more freely offered to-day on time. For some days past the sales have been principally for cash, but not to a great extent. It opened at 934 cash, and left off at 93) por cent. The purchases are almost entirely for investment. Chicago and Rock Island opened firm at 62 per cent, but declined towards the close. The sales were not large, and very little stock was pressing on the market. The rapid rise in Hudson River Railroad stock thia morning was the feature of the market. The atten- tion of capitalists and others has been directed to this road by the quiet and unassuming character of ite operations and management. It is, we believe, progressing «lowly, but steadily, in the reduction of | its floating debt. This is the trne text of prosperity and economy. At the second board the market was argé tran: lower. In some stocks an important reaction realized, and there appeared to be free sellers at the decline. There was an active bus. ness. The cause is attributed entirely to the fact that many holders who came in at low points of the market are realizing. This is but natural after such a rise; and the market may be unsettled for some days in consequence. Missouri State 6's fell off $ per cent; Mlinois Central bonds, j; Canton Company, $; Cumberland Company, 4; Pacific Steam- ship Company,1; New York Central Railroad, 4; Brie, 1; Hudson River Railroad, j; Harlem, 9; Har- Jem preferred, §; Reading, 1; Michigan Central, 1; Panema, $; Galena and Chicago, 14; Chicago and Rock Island, 14. After the board prices ruled higher, and the market was very firm at the close, It is the general opinion of the street that the next move up- wards will carry prices above the highest points yet touched. So long as money continues so abundant and the banks continue to lend their powerful sup- port to speculation, the inflation must go on. The views of outside operators are not near so extrava- gant as those entertained by the oldest, shrewdest, and usually not over sanguine brokers at the board, fegarding future prices. The London correspondent of an evening cotemporary writes by the Niagara as follows: — Thus far the reductions whieh have taken place hace failed to stimulate any revival of speculation, either in trace or on the Stock Exchange. fhe bankers, conse quently, are all full of money, and as their only legiti ‘Tate way of employing it ie in discounte or the purchase of copeols of Exchequer bills, the latter eecurities have been driven up. ip the share market there are @ vast The receipts to-day include $51,000 from customs. The steamship Arabia, from this port for Liver- pool to-day, carried out $598,309 in specie. The closing rates for sterling exchange by this packet were 94 a 94 per cent premium. The bulk of specie shipments for this season, and for some time to come, is over, and we can now look for an accumulation at least to the full extent of our California receipts. A letter from Messrs. D. Bell, Son & Co., to their correspondents in this city, dated Lomdon, Jan. 29, says:— $ Our méney market has experienced an extraordinary chasge; and money with us at this time is superabundant, and with the prospect of a further vast indux is likely to become more £0, 80 that there is every expectation of higher prices for all sold securities. Mersrs. Berenberg, Gossler & Co. write from Ham- burg, on the 27th of January, as fullows:— Money is very plentiful, and discount, in absence of aby materia! tr: ng, has declined to two per cent for first names.. Confidence returns more and more, and transactions become daily more regular. . We understand that letters have been received by the Niagara from Mr. Moran, President of the Erie Railroad, at the office of the company, in which he speaks in the-nost satisfactory terms of the prospect of a successful issue to his present mission in behalf of the company. The coupons of the first mortgage (1882) bonds of the Milwaukie and Horicon Railroad Company will be paid at the company’s office, No. 47 Exchange place, on presentation. This company will soon be in a condition to renew the work of construction. It seems to have passed through the panic about as easily as any Western railroad company, and to have come olit with as little loss, The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company have commenced a suit against the Pennsylvania Coal Company forsbenefits resulting to the latter from the enlargement of the canal some years since. An ad- ditional toll was provided for in the contract be- tween the two companies, to be paid by the Coal Company in the event of such enlargement; but they having repeatedly refused to recognize the claim, a suit has been commenced. The amount involved is nearly or quite $500,000. The stockholders of the Coal Company will readily see the effect upon the value of their property in case the suit goes against them. The evidence in the case is now being taken before a’ commission in this city. The Boston Post of the 16th instant, gives the fol- lowing review of the stock market of that city:— ‘The constantly increasing accumulation of unemployed means seems t be gradually affecting prices, and en couraging speculative action. All the railroads were bet- ter to-day. For Cambridge (Horse) Railroad 80 was bid, and but 12 shares were offered below 85. Large holders are asking 56. A few shares of Minnesota, offered at the outset at 120, were eagerly taken, and the market was finally cleared at 125,the latter figure being bid at the close. “Isle Royale” was active at 4. Tae rise in copper is help- jog copper stocks materially, We learn that the Minnesota has been offered 224 centa for a considerable lot. At 22 | cents for copper, this price will earn from $13 to $16 per annum, at the reduced prices for labor and supplies. fhe last accounts from ‘Isle Royale” say that the mine is real- ly looking famously. At all points but one the ground is rich. The expenditures have been reduced considerably. “Rutland Firsts’’ advanced $1, and were in demand at 29. “Carey” sold at $7, seller's option, no cash stock being offered at any price. This stock is susceptible of a hand some advance—vide figures in “faance and business.’ Waverley, Huron and Toltee were in quick demand.
