Police Intelligeuce. E HE LATE EXTENSIVE ROBBERY OF DOUBLOONS—AR- AEST OF ONE OF THE THIEVES WITH FOUR THOU- SAND POUR HUNDRED DOLLARS IN HIS POSSESSION. ‘On the night of the 28th ultimo, it will be remembered, the bark Pautucket,"then lying in the stream bound for ‘Frinidad, W. 1., was robbed of $10,000 in Spanish doub- Joons by the first mate and steward, who mede their es” ‘tape in the long boat of the vesseland carried off the rich dooty, The following extract made from the Hekato of We 30th ultimo, will more fully refresh the memories of ‘eur readers in relation to the robbery :— The particulars of an extensive robbery on shipboard, whe: 10,000 in Spanish doubloons was carried off b; ee ecen eto tight yesterday. Caplain McBean, of fhe bark Pautucket, for Trinidad, W. The boat stolen from the Pautacket is eighteen jong. Any information concerning the whereabouts of the fugitives should be at once conveyed to the Deputy Superintendent’s office in Broome street. It is thougtit ‘hat the accused may have gone to Philadelphia. Ever since the night of the robbery detective policeman Sider has been continually on the watch for the thieves and the stolen money. He associated himself with police- man McCord, of the Deputy’s office, and worked day and night with the hope of capturing the accused. A clue to the whereabouts of the steward was obtained on the third day after the robbery, but no trace whatever of the mate would be discovered. The mulatto was traced from one sailor boarding-house to the other, until at last the detec- ‘ives found that he had left New York, and had gone over to Long Island, Where he had taken up his abode the de- tectives could not at first ascertain, but luckily they suc- ececied in getting the valuable information relative to the residence of Pagen. They learned that he was livin, great secresy at Farmingdale, on the Long Island Me yoad, where his strange manner of ltving led the inhabi- ‘ants of that village to believe that they had a fugitive Blave amongthem, Pagen was completely taken aback ‘when he was notifled to accompany the detectives to New ‘York. He declined handing over his share of the plunder, Dut was finally induced to make a restitution of every dol- lar be had in his possession. In an old stocking, carefully stowed away in the house, was found $4,400 in doubloons, which Pagen declared to be the sum total of his share of the Dooty as allotted him by the fugitive mate. On being asked if he knew where Remeck was, he replied that he did not; that when they came ashére on the night of the robbery they divided the mouey, and then parted. ould not form any idea which way the mate had gone, as he bad not seen or heard from him since the night of the robbery. MEETING OF STOCKHOLDERS OF THE MIDDLESEX MILLS ‘A meeting of the stockholders of this corporation was held this forenoon, at the warehouse of Lawrence, Stone & Uo., No. 4 Milk street. The attendance of shareholders was large, the number present being about seventy. A. T. Hall, Faq., President of the Corporation, explained its condition, and considered it to have been in a prosperous state till a recent period. He was much surprised at the late developements. George H. Kuhn, the new treasurer, en account of what was doing at the mills at present. fe thought there had been mismanagement in conducting them, some $200,000 having been wasted. Mr. J. C. Ayer, of Lowell, condemned all concerned in mi the cor- poration, and was particularly severe upon the late trea- surer. The Lowell stockholders in general came fully charged with indignation, which several of them vented with power upon the heads of all engaged in the direction of the affairs of the company. B. F. Butler, Esq, wanted a thorough — in of the Operations of the corporation—no whitewasl fair—but one that would expose delinquency, if such there were. A committee of investigation was appointed, consisting of the following named gentlemen:—Gen. B. F. Butler, irman; George W. Lyman, of Boston; J. C. Ayer, of Lowell; James Cook, of Lowell; Wm. Sohier, of Boston. The committee are to report in thirty days. The absence of Mr. Samuel Lawrence, former Treasu rer, from the meeting, created some remark. Mr. Jarvis Slade’s absence was caused by illness. The Lowell dele- gates seemed to fear that if reform were not instituted in the method of conducting the corporations in that city, it would become a second class town, and grass grow in the streets now furrowed by the busy wheels of labor. The tenor of feeling among all the stockholders was that the selling agencies of the company should be disconnected from the financial department, and thus private specula- tion at the expense of the credit of the corporation be ren- dered impossible. It is due to Mr. Oliver H. Perry, one of the firm of Law- rence, Stone & Co., to state that in bis position as manu- facturing partner, he was not aware of the financial condi tion of the house. {From the Boston Transcript, Dec. 8.} THE BAY STATE MILLS. The shareholders of the Bay State Mills collected in large numbers this forenoon, at the warehouse of Law rence, Stone & Co., No. 4 Milk street, to ascertain the con- dition of the corporation, if possible, and to take whatever action in the matter might be deemed proper. In the opinion of Mr. C. there were persons walking on State street to-day—holding their heals as high as anybody—who, if they received their deserts, ‘would not be at Siberty. Mr. GuorGRS. HitaR begged to mtrude afew remarks, There is nobody bere bul levis saddened and disheart- ened by the revelations of the last few weoks. For two years the books of the Bay State Mills jooked well no one had the slightest idea of any difflculty; yet even then a frightful chasm existed, bridged over by @ slight film, which has recently broken like glass. ‘Mr. E148 presented a resolution for a committes of in- ‘vestigation, which was amended at the suggestion of Messrs. Hillard and C. 1. Woodbury, and passed in the annexed form:— ‘That a committee be nominated by the chair to select a committee to investigate the affaire of the corporation and report at an adjourned meeting, to be called by them as s00n as may be, and recommend such course as they may judge —y i ae iS org the interests of the cor- |) ant to bring to just ment aD, r- sons, if any thers be, ortmianlly nt ae he Messrs. The com- mittee reported the names of the following gentlemen to constitute a committee of investigat'on:—Francis B, Crown- inshield, C. P. Curtis, Geo, W. Lyman, Peter T. Homer and R. 8. The feeling among the stockholders was lediy in favor of a complete and rigid scrutiny into the condition of the corporation. The sentiments of the various speakers demanding such an in- ‘vestigation, as we should put criminality where it belong- ed, were loudly applauded. Sufferings of the Solid Men of Boston. {From the Boston Transcript, Dec. 7.) This year will long be memorable as the most disas- trous one to the property of our citizens known within the present century. The only class of persons or capitalists ‘that have escaped are the owners of real estate well !o- cated in the city, the holders of State or city securities, and the holders of frst class mortgages. These remain firm, while all others are more or jess involved in ruin, by the almost total destruction of many classes of person property. The unwise capitalists who changed their safe investments that were yielding them six per cent per annum, to dabble in corporation and business paper, have had their ‘‘fingers burnt’ so seriously that they now cry “hand off,” and will probably be very cautious about such operations in future. The persons who have been the projectors of the immense expensive manufactory es tablishments, find their investments gone. Persons in the jobbing trade find their means locked up in dapre- ciated stocks of goods, or in protested notes due them from suspended parties at the West and in New England. The mercantile interest has suffered to as great an extent as any other, and commercial men will find themselves crippled for years. Ships and cargoes have alike depre- ciated, and a long time must elapse before the losses aro ascertained, the goods sold, the mouey attained and the voyages settled up, Many of these persons aré looking forward with interest to see what dividends will be paid in January,as they need the funds to meet their bills at the first of the year. We hear of the case of a gentleman of this city who was appointed trustee of the estate of a deceased person and guardian ‘of some minors, and who, thinking safety should © mainly consulted in the investment of the funds thus committed to him, sold off the stock: the evtate, and sted the procee ies, where he was sure of six per raised yalue of th’s property was about $150,000 two years ago. The difference,to-day bi tween the market value of the stocks sold and ‘the secur. ties now held by the party, is no less than forty thousand dollars. It is reported in financial circles that the personal estate of an opulent merchant who diet in Boston less than four ears ago, Valued in 1854 at $1,800,000, and consisting of various aunty ‘of railway shares and bonds, has shrank so much during the past two years that the Wepreciation is more than a million of dollars It is stated that the manufacturing stocks owned by a single family have depreciated more than a million of doliars in value within two years. The personal property of many individuals has faded away during the present year like “dissolving views,” and the surprise attending the change is similar in many respects to that which usually attends those novel exhibitions, Navigation OF THE MississiPr1—By a table published in the St. Paul Pioneer, it appears that the pro- sent has been the shoriert season of navigation on the Mississippi to St. Paul for fifteen years.
