Tuvrspay, Dec. 3—6 P. M. The stock market opened and closed heavy this morning. At the first board the tendency was downward throughout. Ohio 6’s declined 4 per cent; Frie bonds, 1871, 4; Illinois Central bonds, 4; Ameri- can Exchange Bank, $; Erie Railroad, }; Michigan Southern preferred, 4; Galena and Chicago, 1}; Illi- nois Central Railroad, 4; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 4; Reading, 3. Michigan Central Railroad advanced 4 per cent; Cleveland and Toledo, }; La Crosse land grant bonds, 1. New York Central Railroad was a little more active to-day. It sold as low as 73 per cent, seller 60 days. The resumption of naviga- tion on the Erie canal will take away a great deal of freight which otherwise would have been turned | upon the Central road. Navigation on the lakes is wbout over for the season, and there are but few en » afloat. The canal will therefore bring | forward early all that arrives. The busi- | ness of the railroad this month will be | very small. The February dividend of this road | does not depend so much upon earnings as is gene- | rally supposed. For several years past the divi- dends have been borrowed, and we do not see why | aloan should not be made for that purpose this | year. When traffic is active and the road is doing a good business, the actual net earnings of the com- pany just about suffice to keep the road and roll” | ing stock in good working order. The loans made | for the dividends enable the company to keep its | property up to proper points for operating safely out of net earnings. This year there will be no net | earnings of consequence, and the road and ma- | chinery are likely to run down, so that at some future | time heavy expenditures will be required to restore | the line to a state of efficiency for business. It will therefore be seen that with the usual loan for divi- dends the company will this year run largely in arrears. At the second board the market for some things was a little better. Pa- cific Steamship Company advanced § per cent; Erie bonds, 1871, 4; Erie, 3; Reading, 4; Michigan Southern preferred, 4; Chicago and Rock Island, 4. Mlinois Central Railroad fell off } per cent; La Croase and Milwaukie, 4. The stock market attracts very little attention just now. Outside holders merely post themselves, 40 a8 to make available the best op- portunity to realize. The clique of bulls have no confidence in the real or market value of the securi- ties they are operating in, and no doubt wish them- selves well out of the combination in which they are concerned. A few weeks since these bulls were the most desperate bears in the street, and if they could saddle upon outside speculators the loads of stocks | they are now carrying, it would not be many days | before the same individuals would be rampant bears | agsin. The clique is not large, and is not likely to | be ony larger. The most sensible portion of the old bear party is quietly looking on, waiting for the coming of that good time the bulls fee! so sanguine | about. The outsider who does not sell his stock at current rates, simply makes a mistake—that’s all.
