The Theatres Last Night. ‘BPPRCT OF THE PANIC ON PUBLIC AMUBEMENTS—STA- ‘TOTIOS OF ALL THA THRATRRS. ‘We give this morning, ag a sort of barometer of the Limes, « report from each of the eleven theatres that were Open last night in this city. Two of these theatres, (the Academy of Music and Barnum's Mugeum,) opened for the winter peason. ‘ihe #tatistics of the number of wudi- Worse ani the money receipts at each theatre, are given from the best data we could obtain, We believe they are safiiciently correct for all practical purposes, It should be borne in mind, however, that as these reports &re made on the evening preceding the general election, there should be at least twenty-tive per oent added to the receipts, @ large number ‘ef the attendants at the theatres being engaged in saving the country. It will be seen, however, by the figures given below, that nearly 16,000 persons spent almost 96,000 at the city theatres last night. ACADEMY OF MUSIC—OYRNING OF THH WINTER SBA- SON OF THE ITALIAN OPERA. ‘The Opera season was commenced last night under very cheering auspices. The house did not appear so full as on many previous occasions when leas money was taken, Mr, Ullinnn having cut off a great army of camp followers who have always had freo tickets, and applauded in the wrong ces, besides being general nuisances. The au- dience Included about Nfteen hundred persons, and the receipts were near to twelve hundred dollars. The open- Opera was the “Semiramide”’ of Rossini, the rales dis- tributed &s follows: — Semirainide, ‘Angri. Pers Sig. Gassier. -dig. Labocetta. Oroe Fortini. Mw. de Lagrange’s Semiramido is quite good, aut she was in excellent voice. The triumphs of the’ evening were wou, however, by a’Angri, who made her debat Apere in opera. She sang very finely throughout, ant made © gg in her Opening air gnd the duett with Assur. r acting also was admirable. Gassier’s fhe Voice and excelient method were displayed to the best advantage in Assur. ? ‘The orchestra and chorus were excellent, and the ensemble of the stage was striking. On Wednesday the new tenor, Bignardi and Mile. Frezzolini sing, and on Thars- day, the principal artists assist at Thalberg’s and Vieux- temp’s concert at Niblo'¥ saloon. THR BROADWAY THEATRE. The Ronzani ballet troupe are closing their engage- ment at the Broadway. This is their last week in the city, as they commence an engagement next Monday in Bos- ten. Were it not for the monetary crisis the Ronzant troupe would have made a very profitable, as they have made & most brilliant season, The bullet of ‘Faust’ was produced by them in faultiess style, and was succeeded, after a successtul run, by the builet ot the “Golden Horse,” and now they announce another, “The Heroine of Cale Dria,’’ as being inactive preparation, They have received, as they certamly deserved, « large share of popular patron- age, for tosome of the best dancers We have ever bad here they have added decidedly the best ballet corps. By their entertainments the Broauway bas resumed tts popularity , and has again become one of the most fashionable places of public amusement in the city. Gf those who patronize the ballet a large proportion are Italians, French and Spanish. ‘Lhe attendance last night was quite large, al though the house was not so full as it ought to lave been, considering the attractions presented. ‘There were probably some two thousand persons in the house, most ‘of them belonging to the gay and fashionable circies of society, Among whom the departure of the Ronzani troupe will bo estcemed @ public loss. BURTON'S THEATRE. : ‘There was a capital house here last night for the first night here of “Janet Pride,” Mr. Bourcicault’s very effec- tive Ove act drama, which was produced in the Chambers street theatre two years ago. The lower part of the house was packed, and we should estimate that there were seventeen Lundred persons in the theatre, paying $800, Bliss Cushman’s acting in Janct was aa vigorous and effective as ever, und we can repeat our former com: mendations of Mr. Burton’s Richard Pride. The same play is announced for this evening. LAURA KERNE’S. ‘The financial pressure, or the near approuch of the election, or both combined, somewhat thinned this usually well Milled beautiful little theatre. The attendance last night was a diminished one, but the performance was as Drilliant as ever. ‘be new farce, My Son Mana,” Com ‘Taylor's comedy of the * Victims,’’ and the pretty come- dietia, “ Living ‘Yoo Fast,” was the Dill. ‘The statistics relative to the umber of the audiences and the receipls, Will be found below, WALLACK’S THEATRE. Three popular pieces were given at this houre last night to @ very fair audience, Bourcicault’s adaptation of Seribe's piece, “The Tavisible Hush "has made a sensation, and will draw tor some time r NIBLO'S GARDEN, “ Roreas"”” was given again last night at Niblo’s in ex- cellent style. Mis a popular favorite, as is evident from the thet that the state of the moucy market dor feem to her last nigh, was filled a+ Well as Was compatible with comiort. BOWERY THEATRE. Whatever effect the “erisis” may have on other places of amusement, the Bowery is doing a swimaming business. Last night over 2,600 persons were comfortably seated in this popular theatre, and from the continuous plaudits we inay justly sume the performance of *Virgimius” and “Jack shcppard” was ail that it ehould be. ‘This un precedented success may in a great measure be attri ited to Mr. idly, who, as manager and actor, is Winning ail classes, Mins Sallie St. Clair, “' possesses much maseti¢ racters she represented. She has goo © points,’ up capitally, and has a fascinating manneriem which never Mats to go down with the audionce, ‘To-night there is a great bill, and the usual overflowing house will be the resuit BARNUM'S MUSEUM. Fihiopian minstrel entertainments seem to have lost none of their attraction for the public. The negro melo dies fall as pleasantly on the ear as they did when they were novelties, years ago, and the drotieries and whimsi- calities of “Bones” still find appreciative and laughing 4 the stringency the fortunes of Ethiopian minstrels, pay ther quarters for two or three ent, whieh they never fail to have when they go to the minstrels. ‘The new and handsome theatre which George Christy aud Woou's company now occupy, ‘on Browdway , has been well patronized since its opening, Jt is said to bold 2,600 persons, and as it was more than three-fourths full last evening, there must have been some 2,000 persous present. Unlike the audiences at the Acade- my of Masic, or Niblo's, or the Broadway, thoee at the minstrels are usually made, up for the most part, from the artican class of the community. It is gratitying to know, therefore, that the monetary difficulties have not yet de prived the patrons of Kthiopian minstrelsy of that source Of enjoy ment. DRYANT'S MINSTRELS. Although we have seen the representations of these popular minstrels better attended than they were last evening, yet there was no indication, in the number of the andience, of their suffering from the pressure in the money market. The hall will bold from ten to eleven hundred persons, and, like & Broadway omnibus, tis ometines made to take in more than it Was ever mtigaded to accommodate; but, as a general thing, the average number during a good season is nine hundred. Last night there Were about seven hundred and fifty, a very slight {ailing off, it must be admitted, considering the hard times and the rigid economy that it was sy Ahad been established in the domestic circles of New York. So far a* the minstrels and so far also ae the audience were concerned, no one Who saw either would ever ima ine that our city wae now passing through a terrible ial crisis. “i PRENDERGAST 8 MINSTRELS. ‘The ‘chaste, light and laughable performances,” which the public informed are presented nightly at the Olym pic, by Prendergast’s Minstrel, attracted @ tolerably Jarge audience last evening, and the receipts, as may be secu from the table, amounted to a rey, fairsum. The performers were as good as ever, and quite a number Penew things with which to amuse their patrons. If others have suiferes, of are laboring ander the the bard times, they have certainly no reason to complain, hor will they, so long as their performances are so well attiended as they Wete last evening. The theatre, the Oyers and other places may exhibit a falling off in the diminution of Hieir receipts, but negro minstrelay appears to powsess a charm that will carry it through the ‘hard times aucceast Prenderyast’s company were in their element last evening, and they will no doubt continae #0 as long @ they are so well supported and haye so many 6 laugh at them NEW YORK STADT THEATRE, ‘The audience at this theatre Inst evening numbered About eight hundred, and the receipts amounted to about trod dollars, This was considered as below the Srevepe, as the plore had been played over @ week and had become somewhat familiar to the patrons of tho thoatre. DR. RANR'S AnETIC VOYAGES. ‘This deservedly popular exhibition at the Empire [lall,, Broadway, drew a fall honse last evening. Charles t. Gaylor, Faq., the orator of the evening, briefly sketchod the bistory of all the Arctic expeditions antecedent to thatof Dr Kane, and then discussed that at length, de- NE veloping all the thrillings incident and occurronces of that Murray & memorable expedition. M. ‘The stock market continues depressed, and the operations to-day do not show much activity. State stocks and railroad bonds were in better demand to- day, generally at better prices, Erie bonds, 1871 aud 1883, advanced on the opening price this moru- ing, and sold to some extent. New York Central, Erie and Reading about monopolized the business in railroad stocks, the last two at lower prices. At the fit board, Pacitic Steamship Company declined 1 per cent; Erie, 1; Reading, 1; Michigan Southern, old, 4; Chicago and Rock island, 4. New York State sixes, 1573, advanced 1 per cent; Hlinois Cen tral bonds, 1; Erie bonds, 1871, 2; New York Cea thal Railroad, }; Galena and Chicago, j; Cleveland aud Toledo, 4; La Crosse and Milwaukie, 4. At the second board the market was véry much unsettled and a very small amount of business was transacted. Delaware and Hudson fell off 1 per cent; New York Central Railroad, @; Cleveland and | Toledo, $; Galena and Chicago, }. This has been a , pretty hard day among the railroad and other cor- porations where interest payments had to be made and we have heard of several delinguencies. The list 80 far is as follows: City of Milwaukie, interest due Nov 1. La Crosse and Milwaukie Railroad Company Ist mortgage bonds, interest due Nov. 1. Chicugo, St. Paul and Fond du Lac Company 1st mortgage bonds, interést due Nov. b. Evie Railroad Company Ist mortgage bonds, float ing debt, &e. In the ease of the city of Milwaukie aud the La Crosse and Milwaukie Railroad Company, it ix poss- ble the default was owing to the inability to gt funds here on account of the derangement of tle domestic exchanges. The Chicago, St. Paul aud fod du Lac Company are probably in the same position. If this is the only cause it will soon be removed aad payment resumed. In the case of the Erie Railroad, the company commenced paying on the interest due this morming, but the supply of money was not suff: cient, and after a time payment stopped. The truth of the eld adage, that the early bird catches the worm, wos verified in this case. Those who present- ed their coupons early at the company’s office got the money, while those who went late came away empty The finances of all corporations, whether cities, towns, railroads or banks, are in a snarl, and it will take some time to get them straight again. Those who did so wil not be attracted Ly the new proposals from the same source. As no account appears in the report of to day's proceedings of a contribution being made on the spot for the company, it must have been alimdoned ,. The Board of Brokers is just now the last place to go to for money. They-promised to do all they could to help the company, and there the matter will drop ‘The Governor of this State has set apart Thursday the 26th of November, as a day of thanksgiving, aad it would be a good move in Mr. Moran to | secure the services for that day of all charitable persons, and particularly of the managers of our churches, to pass round the contribution boxes, or to place boxes in conspicuous places, labelled “ Aid for the Erie Railroad Company,” so that every could give 4 little to help along that great work. Kyen the little children might give their pennies to help the stockholders out of their dilficulties, Se- , riously, this begging expedition of Mr. Moran for the Erie Railroad Company has got to be avery dis- graceful affair, and the sooner it is abandoned the better, After all the efforts made thus far, we be- libve the total cash subscriptions amount to about four thousand dollars, Mr. Moran's plan is not a feasible one, and cannot be carried out. He asks the old bondholders, the stockholders and the publi¢ generally to come forward and take six millions of bonds, at a cost of about 64 a 65 per cent, for which he will give them a fourth mortgage. Sach a pro position cannot meet with much favor #0 long ag any one can go into the market and purchase third mortgage bonds at 59 a 60 per cent The returns of the banks of this city for the past week show the following changes in the aggregates compared with the week previous: Decrease in loans and discounts Increase in specie... Decrease in cireulation 6 Increase in deposit, actual ure ,s08 it will be seen that the reduction in discounts still goes on, but not at such a rapid rite as exhibited for some weeks previous. The increwe in specie and deposits is the favorable feature of the statement, and should do much towards retoring public conth dence. The specie reserve nov amounts to nearly thirteen million of dollars. Tle California steamer is near at hand with one millionand a half on board, which, with large receipts from other sources, will swell the banks’ reserve next week to the neighbor. hood of fifteen million. The asence of large mer- cantile failures helps the banks to keep ap their dis- count line, as the withdrawal of suspended paper made quite an item in the reduction. ‘The traffic receipts of the Grand Trank Railroad of Canada for the weekending October 17, 1857, were $50,011 against $26885 for the corresponding month last year, showing an increase of $24,129. | Total traffic from July 1, 1857, to date, $743,000 | against $395,351 ‘for tle same time the previous year.
