M. The stock market to-day was gn improving one from the opening. With more act in all the leading railroad stocks, better prices ruled. At the first board Ohio 6’s, 1860, advanced 4 per cent; Mis souri G’s, 14; Exie bonds, 1871, 2}; do., 1862, 1: New York Central Railroad, 1; Erie, 3; Reading, 1}. Pennsyivania Coal fell off 1 per cent; Cleveland and Toledo, 3; Michigan Southern preferred, 2; Galena and Chicago, 1. Illinois Central Railroad opened at 82 and closed at 83 per cent, with mode- rate sales, All the most prominent Western rail- road stocks appeared to be in demand, and were freely offered. Almost the entire movement in the market is confined to the brokers. Qutsiders may be picking up some small odd lots for invest- ment; but there is a strong bull movement, which is resisted by a few determined spirits, who are not satirfied that we are yet out of tie woods in our financial troubles. The leading bulls come from the old bear party, but there are a few of the old grizzlysJeft, who have an abiding faith in the dishonesty of managers of incorporated compa- nies generally, and of railroad companies in particu" lar. The earnings of our railroad companies for the month of October, this year, will be far behind those for the same month last, We understand that the New York Central receipts will show a decrease of more than one hundred thousand dollars. The Har- lem receipts for the month will be about ninety thou- eand dollars, nearly one-half of which will, we are informed, be net mcome. This road is now well managed. The mileage has been largely reduced, same amount of receipts the net earnings are now much larger than heretofore. The wh}le secret of this can be found inthe fact that there is now a practical man at the head of the management, and | he seems to know how and where to gave money without injuring the efficiency of the road. We want active, scientific and practical men as presi our railroad companies, and not fancy finan 3 | Let a finance committee of the directors nd | to that, and lot the president’ attend to the | actual operating affairs of the line of route. At the second board the mark¢t was rather weak, | and for some railroad stocks glosed heavy. New York Cer.tral Railroad declined | per cent; Reading, 1}. Erfe Railroad advanced j per cent; Cleveland | and Toledo, }. The movement in Erie this after | noon was to some extent, and the sales were princi. | pally for cash. The most irregular and uncertain stock on the market just now is Reading. It.runs up and down two and three per cent without the slight: | est difficulty. The only State stock sold this after- noon was Missouri 6's, at 69a 69] per cen’. The prompt and decided course puraned by the Governor | and Legislature of Missouri in providing for the pay- ment of the Jonuary interest on the public debt, in- dependent of the different railroad companies, and | for the prompt payment of interest when due, forall ime, bas had a favorable effect upon the market, | and will soon place’ Missouri State 6's as high upon | the list as 1t ever was. A. H. Nicolay will hold a special sale of stocks and bonds tomorrow, (Saturday,) at half.past Tr o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exchange. | 8S. Draper will hold a special sale of bonds and stocks to-morrow, (Satutday,) at half past 12 o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exeflange, ~~ | A. H, Maller will hold his regular auction sale of stocks and bonds to-morrow, at balf past 12 o'clock, at the Merchants’ Exchange. The Baltimore and Ohio Ratroad has declared a | semi-annual dividend of four and a half per cent on | the stock of the Washington Branch; the Nashua and Lowell Railroad a semi-annual dividend of four per cent, payable on Monday next. The officers of the Conne:ticn' banks are to hold a convention at Hartford, next Monday, to take into consideration the proposed cutting loose from the Suffolk Bank, and to see what they cam do to belp their customers. The interest on the State debt of Pennsylvania, due February 1, 1858, will, we understand, be paid In the bank suspension law recently passed by the Pennsylvania Legislature, it is stipu- lated that the deposits by the State Treasurer, or to the credit of the commonwealth, in the several banks and other corporations, and all bank notes which are now or may hereafter be in the treasury, | during the period of suspension, shall, from time to | time, on demand of the said treasurer, be paid by the said banks, or other corporations, respectively, in specie, in such amounts as may be required by the treasurer to enadle him to pay the interest a>- eruing on the public loans of the commonwealth.
