The steamchip Arabia, which left Liverpool on morning of the 10th ult., arrived at this port yesterday morn- ing. In the Liverpool cotton market prices were firmly maintained at an advance of one-eighth of a penny. Flour was scarce, and had advanced six pence a barrel. Sugar was less active, at unchanged prices. The demand for money in the London mar. ket was very brisk. On the 18th ult., consols closed st 901 a 90). Shares of every description had fallen comsiderably on the Paris Bourse, and the conaition of the Vienna money market, as well as that of many of the German banks, attracted a good deal of uneasy attention. The American money crisis was commented on extensively by the press. From India we have additional news brought by the Bowbay mail to London, and telegraphed from Caloutta, by way of Trieste, to the English Foreign Office. The dates are: — Calcutta 10th, Bombay Léth, aud Madras 17th of August. The advices are very important. Delhi was still held by the mutineers, who made fierce sorties on the English troops, amongst whom the cholera bad appeared so severely that it was reported they kad to retire from before the city. Gen. Havelock’s victorious career was in. terrupted by the same enemy, and he was forced to fall back on the ruins of Cawnpore, in order to | nurse bis sick. There was a partial rising of one regiment in the Bombay Presidency, whilst the Governor General was forced to disarm bis body | guard in Calcutta. Lord Elgin had arrived ia that city from China with a emall body of troops. The | Punjab was slightly distarbed, and the English troops had been defeated, near Arrak, with a loss of two bundred men. Reinforcements were beginning to arrive, however, and it was confidently hoped that the Duropeans would triumph soon. From China the dates are Shanghae 15th, and | Hong Kong 26th of July. Silk was higher. It is | @aid that the people ia Pekia were in a wretched state trom a scarcity both of food and money. From Madrid it is reported that General Concha would be retained in office as Captain General of Cubs. The Narvaez Cabinet was very unsteady, owing to the near approach of Queen Christina to | the capital. It was even reported that the Premier had resigned. The Spanish-Mexican negotiations | Fort Bridges with the intention of contesting the progress of the United States troops now on the way to Utah. The American General Committee had rather au exciting time of it last evening. The subject of con- firming the nomination of F.C. Wagner for Gover nor of the Almshouse, was, after a long debate, laid on the table. The other candidates put forward by the eeveral conventions were adopted. The Ninth ward difficulty occupied the attention of the com. mitiee most of the evening, in an exciting debate. It was firally referred to a committee of three, The Seventh Assembly District Nominating Convention ‘was put off until the 12th inst. ‘The Citizen’s Executive Committee met at Con- vention Hall last evening, selected permanent officers, filled up vacancies in the committee, and discussed the probabilities of effecting a union of all parties opposed to the present city government on one set of candidates. The case of Sarah Sands, keeper of a disrepu- table houwe in Eleventh streot, which was been pending for some time in the Special Sessions, was brought to a conclusion on Thursday, by finmg her $50 and binding her in the sum of $500 w pursue a different avocation in future. ‘The cotton market yesterday was quist and the quow tions nominal. The only movement was confired to ship- ents to Liverpool on owners’ account. Fiour, owing to the penio and some less favorable news from Engiand, became depremed aid unsettled, with wide margia be- tweea forced cash sales and transactions effected in the uscal form, Superfine and Western State soid for cash dewn 0 64 25 and as bigh as 6476, Extras were also depress. ed. Canadian and Southern also gave way, but not in the same ra io. Wheat fell about § cents per bushel for com mon Southern white and fair to cood reddo. No Western wheat of momest was sold. Corn was In light stock and firmer, with esies of Weetern mixed at 710. a 120., chiefly at the latter figure. Pork was dull and prices lower. Sales of sugars were confined to 200 a 800 bhds., at rates given in apothor column. Cofiee was quiet but stoady, Fre'ghts wore stiff, with wheat, in bags, for Liverpool, at €Xd « 7d.; flour was at 2s.,and cotton at <d. They were also firm for London, with moderate epgsgoments. The News from India. By the Arabia, arrived yesterday morniog, we have telegraphic advices from Madras to 17th aud Calcutta to 10th August. The news is important. Part of it is positive and may be relied on. The Governor General has at length disarmed his body guard, the finest cavalry regiment in the Indian army, consisting of picked men, many of whom had served for years. The order was un- expected, bat was silently obeyed. All the de- pots of arms and munitions ic Calcutta were di- ligently guarded, as an outbreek was expected on the occasion of the approaching Mohammedan festival. Of the two British armies in Bengal, one--that encamped befure Delhi—had not taken the place; the other—under General Havelock— afier marching to within a day's journey of Lucknow, had been crippled by cholera and forced to return to Cawnpore, heavily laden with sick and stores. A body of 300 infantry had at- tacked the mutineers at Dinapore—with a view to rescue some English prisogers who were ia their hands—and had barely escaped annihila- tion, two hundred of their number being left on the field. Besides these items of authentic news, rumors had reached Eagland by telegraph to the effect that the mutiny had broken out iu the Bombay Presidency, and that some officers and others had been murdered; also, that Gen. Reed bad died, and that the British army before Delhi had retreated to Agra, having lost mauy men by sorties and by cholera, These rumors, thoagh discredited in were going on pleasingly in Paris and Madrid. The Atluntic telegraph cable was about to be | landed from both the Niagara and Agamemnon, and stored in the government dockyard at Plymouth. It was boped that it would soon be successfully laid on ite original route. A good deal of interest was felt with respect to ne approaching conference between the Czar and the Emperor Napoleon. The Czar had arrived in Lerlio. The delegates to the great Convention of the Evavgelical Alliance had met in session in Berlin Rev. Dr. Baird represented the Presbyterians and Jiisbop Simpson the Methodists of the United States. The wonder has been for some time how the Bombay Presidency was kept quiet; but for the rigid cen- sorship enforced over the press in that Presiden- cy, we chould doubtless bave beard more about attempts at mutiny. As for the army before Delhi, it would be a pleasant thing to hear that they were ia any place of safety. Tux Ouzarxe Howse Svaram—Some Ove years since, one of our bankers went out to Lon- Gon, and stayed there some time, He studied the banking syetem of England, and on bis way home elaborated in his mind the Clearing House system, by which each bank pays its debts to the others every morning, and there are no debts or credits between bank and bank. The adoption of the eystem bere was imitated in Boston, but rejected in Philadelphia aad Baltimore. This Clearing Heuse system, combined with the weekly publication of the bank returns—by far the greatest improvement of the age in bankiyg —has been the salvation of our banks during the present crisis, They have not been allowed to tuin themselvee. We hope our friends in the West and in Pennsylvania will study the pheno- menon. THE LATEST NEWS. . ‘The etary Crisis.
