To-day or to-morrow, however,a few of them will be put out of pain, and a few anxious expoctants will be put into oTice, No changes of any importance, we believe, will be made at present. Fupay, August 14-6 PM ‘The stock market has fairly wilted down. With (he fre quent new or overismes of stook, the failure of balls and speculators, and the excessively hot weather, the stook market has fairly caved in. There is no strength nor health im it, Atthe first board to-day Poansylvania Coal Oom- pany fell off 2 per cont; New York Central, «; Erio, i; ; Michigan Southern, old (leferred, 5; do, new preferred, 6; Panama, i; Cleveland and To Isdo, % ; Ohicago and Rook Island, j¢; Milwaukie and Mis- tiasippl, 1. The desire to soll railroad stooke is now stronger than the dinposition exhibited a few days sine to buy. There are now a dozen sellers where there ts one buyer, One fajlure among the bull speculators was Harlem, \¢; Reading, iE af i | vino Undergarments, all Sizes, at hirt and furnishing store, corner of Murray YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, AUGUST -15, 1857. ait ve i li il i fl i ik tal bad to be borrowed. It is now impossible to raise money for euch purposes, and the Cleveland and Toledo Ocmpany profess to make a vir- tue of @ necessity and pass the dividend, so as to ‘apply tho net earnings to the floating debt. New York Central opened and closed heavy this morning. A despe- rate attempt was made some time since to corner this stook, but {t was too big a thing for them. Twenty-(ve millions of railroad stook is not so easily cornered. Cornering com- ‘Dinations tn railroad stocks have had their day for the Present, We understand that the Erie Company will come ont with its new financial programme to-morrow, Bator: day. At the seoond board lower prices ruled all round. There were large sales, partioularly of Michigan Southern com mon deferred. That stock opened at 37 per cont, and Closed heavy at 86 per cent. The sales sum up nearly threo thousand shares. New York Central fell off 3 per cent; Cleveland and Toledo, %; Reading, %; Galena and Chicago, 1. At the close a feeling of great despondency prevailed, and stocks were freely offered at our quota: tions, - After the close of the board Michigan Southern sold at 34 per cent, and was very heavy at that. We gtvo in another part of this day’s paper all the cor. respondence that bas passed between the different parties relative to the recent overissue of stock by the Michigan Southern Railroad Company. It will be seen that the ‘Trust Company and the Rrilroad Company do not agree in their figures. The Trust Company’s report would have shown a much greater difference had not certain parties doctored it before the committee received it. It is a pretty snarl as it stands, and every outside stockholder in this railroad company bas been the victim of an enormous frand. It would be a very pleasant duty for us te point out who the perpetrators of this fraud are, if any move- ment could be made to give us the power of the courts to send for persons and papers.
