Syracuse, July 19, 1867. ‘The national trial of reapers and mowers was brought to @ practical conclusion yesterday; but it is probable some days may elapse before the award of the judges will bo given, There are many conditions upon which their Jodgment will depend. Rapidity of oxecation, toan Ame. rican, is always a great thing; and tho fancy farmer would be very likely to give his suffrages to tho ‘‘machine’” which should go over the ground in least time, But the kind of work done, whether good, bad, or indifferent, aud the amount of power requisite to accomplish it, technically called “draft,” and the comparative simplicity, durabi- Ity and cheapness of the machine—all these are consi. derations superior to that ef speed. All the machines have, I belleve, been subjected to teats with reference to these points, by competent judges, who must “compare notes’ before making up a verdict. They keep thelr own counsel, and thus far have given no inkling of their con clusfons. Nevertheless, it is sufficiently obvious to an observant eye that the ocntest has been reduced to very narrow ImXs; and public opinion, so far as represented here, hay probably very nearly, if not precisely , anticipated the fina award, It should be explained that there are three kinds of machines entered for trial. First, reapers, or machines exclusively for cuuing grain; second, mowers, exelusively for cutting grass; and third, what are cal'ed combined ma chines, which, by slight modifications, can be used for both purposes. Of course the eombined machine is that in which farmers feel most interest, since few of them cas afford, or would desire to have, separate mowers and reap- ers, if a single machine could be made to do both kinds 0° work, Hence laventors have been anxious to combine the essential features of both, without sacrificing too much to weightand {ntricacy; aud it must bo said, to their credi}. that they have succeo ed to a wonderful degree. ‘The three principal prizes, therefore, are—First, for the best combined machine; second, for the best reaper; and third, for the best mower. Of course, even if the com bined machine were not only best of its kind, but also the best mower and reaper, it would be entitled only toa tingle prize. Thus much explained, your correspondent ventur +s to predict that J..H Manuy’s combined ma- chine, with Wood’s improvement, McUormick’s reapsr, and Ball, Attman & Co’s single mower will secure the first awards of the judges and carry off the three grand medals. I bekeve thats prize is to be given to the boat reaper with self rakiag apparatas; bat the self raking part, in all cases, has proved to be un utter failure. ‘The trial Las passed off with very little excitement, ex- cept among the exhibitors and inventors. Instead of a covcourse of thousands to witness the test, as was antict- ted, but a few hundreds made their appearance gw tho rst day, which number dwindled down to a few scores on the last, and all of these, nearly, if not quite, parties interested. Very few farmers were on the ground, the fine harvest weather giving them ample employment at home. Ht was no joke, broiling in the hot svn, in idle staring at show operations with dynanometers, and other lncomprekensibie ometers, which told no story, except to the scientific eye. And so the few farmers who came speedily pulled thetr hats over their eyes and went home, expecting to “ gee it all in the newspapers,”? The oly incident of particular tutcrest wae an im- prompta match on Friday evening, at the close of that day’s proceedings, between McUormick’s reaper and Man- ny’s combined machine, Both had cut the lots assign sd to them with entire success, and it was clear that the other machines, in »opular phrase, were “nowhere.” On tir eve of moving off, however, the McCormick ma chine, with four bereds attached, at the suggestion, it is »aid, of your martial cotemporary of the Uowrier, was seen fo avtack @ part of the Geld where the grain had been left staneing, the gronud betog #0 rough and steep that the jadges bad not aeerigned it to any machine. in fact, no one thought it could be cut atall, unless by an expert cradler, The movement arrested all spectators, and many who were leaving the ground turred back to witwess the bold feat. The machine moved off succesfully down the sieep declivity, through the uneven botlow, up the other side, cisappearing over the brow of the hill, only stopping moreentarily two or three times, for some purpose “to the deyouent upkuowa.’’ At shis instant the Maony -ombined machine came by; tts driver, ata moment's glance, com = the challenge, and without stopping, tarned is machine, with only a single team attached, into the fiel4, right on McCormick's track. There’ was & geveral scramble for the tops of the fences, in order to obtain a gooa view of the struggle. | As im the former tostance the machive proved equal to its upderiaking, performing its work with appa. rept perfect caso, wit vo stoppage except momentary ones for such simple af jastmenw as the nature of the ground required. hb machines performed their task in ecual time, and wheo the spectators went on the dela to examine the work, all parties conceded, and even our martial ecRor (a warm friend of the McCormick interest, by the way,) excinimed that tt was impossible to dis: tupguteh between the performances of the (wo machines. — oflair was ® very preity climax to the day's ex !bttion. ‘There is no doubt that the various mschines for cutting grage and grain have been carried to a very high point of perfection; and | rowst say that! never sawa floer or ‘more intelligent eet of men than the large body of invent- ors and improvers which tbis trial bas brought together. Upwards of forty oliferent machines were brocght to this town, but a number of the weakest failec to enter. Your readers wil! form some {dea of the extent to which the manufacture of there machines is carrted, when I say that i a compuied by good wuthorities that upwards of $5,000,000 is engaged in the business. Probably 6,000 to 8,C00 each of McCormick's, Manny’s and Ketchum’s ma- chines have been sold during the year, to say nothing of large rales of Allen's, Lyman’s, Morgaa’s and Kirby’s— all valuable an‘ popular. A number of these manafac- turers are unable to meet their orders, snd some of the establicomems are realizivg from $100,000 to $300,000 profits par anowm. leannot conclude without expressing my in eg trials like that just termipaied are, in the main, bum! The proprietos of all the leading machines are of same opio on, and | have no doubt that several of ‘eon would have preferred to have given 65,000 each to the Agrieultural Society rather than to be compelled to come here, ata large costof money and time, vrobtin what mut necessarily be an result. {0 the Dature of things, these trials by “ crack Machines,’ managed by ane ro very Title idea af their real every day value and performance.
