NuW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 1857. Burning of the Steamship Loulstana, near Gaiveston. FURTHER PARTICULARS—PARTIAL LIST OF THE PER- sons Lost AND Not) ai From the Galveston News, We re to record one dreadful calamities ‘What bas ever happened in yg cumy. The steamship ‘Louisiana, Captain Sheppard, is now a total wreck, having been burning some six or eight miles to the southeast of this city, in the Gulf, about one o’clock this morning, ‘Our citizens Were aroused by the unusual fire alarm, as the fire was in full might 7 The first intelligence received was oy the arrival of a boat from the u steamer, about sunrise, bringiwg some dozen passengers, our feliow- citizen, Mr. Grover, being among the pumber. ur. Grover says ihat he nad a berth on the larboard up per deck; that the first alarm was persons asking where the fire was at about 1 o'clock; he stepped out of his room and discovered smoke bat no fire; passed round the stern Co the starboard side, where he saw from twelve to twenty pereons preparing to launch the quarter boat; a moment after the flame burst up amidship; returned to the lar- board ride; saw a few lowering down the quarter boat on that side; went to bis room, picked up his shoes and coat and returned and slid down with others into the boat on the starboard side. The engines were still running, but fortunaiely the boat was lowered down without filling; saw no one remaining op that side of the steamer, ‘After getting adrift they looked to discover if they could find any person to take on board, but could see nobody. ‘There were twelve in the boat, all passengers except the second mate, Andrew Smith, to whom Grover says they were all greatly indebted for their rescue. Mr. G. ‘earned from one on the boat that the tiller rope must ave broken—was probably burned off—in consequence of which the steamer was upmanageable at the commence- meat of the fire. The first e‘forts of the captain and offi- cers appeared to be to reach the fire engino, but did not succeed. All communication between the forward and after of the boat was cut off by the fire, which must dave broken out pear the furnace. The starboard boat was being launched when he went into the other. He saw perrons on the forward part of the steamer throwing things over, apparently the batch doors, &c., for the purpose of saving themselves. The working of the engines caused the steamer to leave the boat rapidly, eo that thore in the boat were unable to see or hear anything distinctly, Tae boat landed on the beach, wear the point, about sunrise, where Mr. Grover landed gg years ago, on bis rewrn from the Santa Fe expedi- “otist of names of those who were saved by the boat with Mr. Grover:— Mr. Cleveland, wife, child and servant, of Lavaca; Dr. Arnold, ot Mo.; Mrs. Elizabeth Hart, of Corpus Christi; W. M., and among others, brought Mr. Charles Hughes, che purser of the Loutsiana, ‘Mr. Hughes contirms Mr Grover’s statement as regards the origin of the fire, which broke out in the fireroom at twenty minuies past’ove. H> states that the passengers were all asieep when the fire broke out—that the larboard oat capsized, and thinks some six or eight persons were lost at the time.
